Here are 10 foods the FDA allows small amounts of natural contaminants, including maggots or insect fragments, as outlined in its Defect Levels Handbook:

1. Canned Tomatoes
Allowed: 1 maggot per 500 grams.
2. Tomato Paste or Sauce
Allowed: 2 maggots per 100 grams.
3. Mushrooms (Canned or Dried)
Allowed: 20 maggots of any size per 100 grams.
4. Brussels Sprouts (Frozen)
Allowed: 60 aphids, thrips, or mites per 100 grams; maggots may also be present in small quantities.
5. Canned Sweet Corn
Allowed: 2 or more maggots per 100 grams.
6. Peanut Butter
Allowed: 30 or more insect fragments per 100 grams; trace maggots may also be permissible.
7. Pizza Sauce
Allowed: 30 or more fly eggs per 100 grams, or 2 or more maggots per 100 grams.
8. Canned Pineapple
Allowed: 20% of pineapple by weight may contain mold (maggots are also permissible in trace amounts within moldy fruit).
9. Popcorn Kernels
Allowed: 1 or more rodent hairs per 50 grams, along with trace maggots.
10. Wheat Flour
Allowed: 75 or more insect fragments per 50 grams, including small maggots.
