Why should I respect you?

When I first started working in corporate, my mom told me, “dress for the job you want, not the one you have”. I had fun with my outfits, my actions were authentic, I went to work every day grateful, and ultimately I was promoted into the role I wanted.

Then I changed. I can see that now.

My values never changed, but my motives and actions did. My primary focus was playing the part of leader climbing the ladder, not trying to make a difference.

I wasn’t respecting who I was and why I was chosen for the role. When the bullying started, my victim mentality took over and I allowed it to continue for too long.

It’s not a surprise. How can we expect anyone to respect us if we set the example of not respecting ourselves?

So what was it that made me forget my standards and start drinking the Kool-Aid through a garden hose?

Tune in to this episode of Moment of Presence to find out as I share more about my experience and how I unlocked the door that held my self-respect hostage.
