How to protect muscle mass as we age? resistance exercise
but, number 1: high quality and high quantity protein intake
-leads to healthy, long life
Carbs: how much do we need & how do we use them?
-body needs 70g glucose a day to run brain, RBC, kidneys
[body will make this without having any carbs in our diet]
[RDA is 130g a day]
-avg American is eating 300g a day
Carbs can be used by muscle and adipose
-either burn with exercise or store as fat
"can use 35g glucose at meal before it
requires really high insulin to get it to store"
-this shuts down muscle ability to burn fat
-triggers adipose & liver to make body fat
Old thinking: eat fat, get too many fatty acids around, creates fat...
-that is opposite of what happens
-high insulin following meal makes body insulin resistant
-blood glucose is toxic--diabetes
-damages every organ in body
Muscle is only flexible user of glucose
