Ocean's Toki was the licensed conversion of the eponymous arcade game, also known as JuJu Densetsu in Japan. The project was started on February 6, 2023, by Davide Bottino, retro games creator and journalist at Zzap! Magazine Italia, out of a passion for the original game and a desire to overcome the technical and artistic limitations of the existing C64 conversion. While above average for the machine's standards, the original 1991 Toki is not entirely satisfying for a fan of the arcade game, especially due to its poorly designed sprites. Although well-crafted, the backgrounds were converted from the Amiga version instead of the coin-op, and the soundtrack is completely different from the arcade original. Technically a hack of the original program and not a rewrite from scratch, Toki Remastered will feature greatly improved graphics, a true to arcade soundtrack, and gameplay fixes. Several well-known figures from the C64 coding and hacking scene have joined the project over its nearly 2 years. Their expertise and passion have been instrumental in bringing Davide's ambitious vision to life. Key Enhancements Goals Complete redesign of all the sprites, ensuring fidelity to the original arcade. Extensive touch-ups to the backgrounds, including a full redesign of the final level, to bring them closer to the arcade look while optimizing the pixel art for CRT as well as modern HD monitors. Development Status On December 24, 2024, we released a Demo of Level 1, v0.9, featuring 100% redrawn sprites (while backgrounds, sound, and gameplay remain identical to the 1991 version in the demo). The full Beta v0.9 with all levels will be available in the coming weeks. Long lost game-preview from X-Ample's Hydrogenese from 1989 00:00:07 - Sprite Set 1 00:03:34 - Sprite Set 2 00:06:32 - Sprite Set 3 --- 1989 Digital Marketing Coding: Helge Kozielek Graphics: Michael Detert, Thomas Heinrich Sound: Thomas Detert Hydrogenese was yet another game to come from the excellent X-Ample, who produced many stunning games. ASM magazine issue 7/89 had a short news feature that stated that Mario van Zeist and X-ample were hired to make games for Digital Marketing, followed by some information on both Hydrogenese and Bamboo. However, the BWB link was a red herring, and it was Joachim Fraeder who confirmed that it was X-Ample behind the game. Coder was Helge Kozielek, with graphics by Michael Detert and Thomas Heinrich. The sprites and backgrounds we later recycled and used in Parsec. According to ASM, Hydrogenese was to be a shoot’em up similar to Armalyte or Menace and it was about four “heroes” with different strengths and weaknesses. The player could choose between these heroes and the task was to “clean up” the weapon systems of a space ship. The player was also supposed to also be able to remote control cleaning robots. The original plan was to have a shoot em up section and then sections where you would have a full 4 way platform/scroller, like Hawkeye 2 (which Mario Van Zeist showed Helge how to do). So what happened to the original game and why was it cancelled? Originally the game was planned to be part of a 25.000 DM contest by disk magazine “Game On”, but it wasn’t finished in time. As a result, Helge didn’t get to finish the game and it was split up into several other games and finished by other programmers. Tales of Boon, Darksword and Greystorm used the jump and run levels. Parsec used some of the shoot em up levels, and Hyper Agressive used the puzzle sequences and some of the music. Thomas’ music was split across many other games in the end, but now thanks to Se7en/Digital Excess – you can download the original music demo that Thomas produced. Sadly it is believed that the original incarnation of the game is fully lost, but we hold out hope that it may show up some day. But it seems that most of it did manage to sneak out in the above games, so check them out for a glimpse! It’s been happening a lot lately, but this last disappearance is different, at least to me. Chris Piriah is my friend. He was a ski instructor and in excellent physical condition. He knows his way around mountain ranges. This doesn’t sound right. I need to head on over to Yeti Lodge Resort and find out what has happened to him. Yeti Mountain is a multi-genre interactive adventure game developed by a talented team headed by Russell Mills. Spread out across three distinct episodes as you set out to Yeti Lodge Resort to investigate the suspicious disappearance of your best friend Chris. The first episode is a quest based RPG-style exploration game where you interact with characters, participate in ski events and explore the Resort surroundings in order to uncover clues. This game is the Commodore 64 port of Lock'n'Chase, an arcade game developed by DECO in 1981. The aim of the game is to enter a vault and collect all the coins and, if possible, any other treasure that may appear. The thief must then exit the vault without being apprehended by the Super Ds (cops). The thief can close doors within the maze to temporarily prevent the cops from advancing and allow him to keep his distance from them. Only two doors can be closed at a time. The thief can dodge the police by running through the open side doors. When he exits through one side, he quickly enters on the other side. The Super D cops are called Stiffy, Scaredy, Smarty and Silly. The coins are worth 20 points each. In each level, money bags randomly appear in the center of the maze. Money bags are worth 500, 1000, 2000 and up to 4000 points respectively each time they are collected. Each level also has a specific treasure that appears near the center of the maze whose value varies from 100 to 5000 points depending on the level itself. If the cops are trapped between two doors in the upper right corner or in the lower left corner of the vault, the player earns extra points (100, 300, 1000 or 2000 depending on the number of trapped cops).
