SSRIs [Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors]
are really debated on their effectiveness for mental health...
-work by increasing serotonin in the brain
[also increases serotonin in circulation system]
-by inhibiting the re-uptake, serotonin stays at neural cleft
Due to higher serotonin, supposed to improve mood &
reduce symptoms of depression & anxiety

SSRIs: long term use is associated with increased weight
and IR...thought to be due to increased appetite for
sweet/gooey or salty/crunchy foods

TCAs [Tricyclic Antidepressants] block re-uptake of both
serotonin & norepinephrine
-can also affect other signaling molecules like
-histamine & acetylcholine
-side effect is improved mood
TCAs strongly associated with weight gain, IR and
dyslipidemia [higher TG]...
-increased appetite for carbs +
reduced metabolic rate

MAOIs [monoamine oxidase inhibitors] prevent breakdown
of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine
-increasing their levels in brain, providing some relief
from depression
Not prescribed as must today, but lead to weight gain

Atypical anti-psychotics used for both depression & anxiety
-modulates both dopamine & serotonin receptors
-used to manage mood and some psychotic disorders
Linked to severe weight gain & IR that follows
-often leads to craving high carb foods
-impairs glucose metabolism, risking T2D
