Part 5 of 7 - Military Retiree Detained On Navy Base For Flying Trump Flags
I am a US Army retiree who retired off active duty in 2020. I live on Whidbey Island in Washington and regularly access Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI). I am a civilian. I am not in the reserves. I am not a Department of Defense employee. I do not work on NASWI. 

On 10 October 2024 at 6:15pm I attempted to access the NASWI for shopping purposes. I had a flag pole mounted on the back of my jeep flying two Trump flags. The gate I tried to enter through was manned by two Navy military police officers. I handed over my military retiree ID and it was scanned. The gate sentry saw that I was a retiree and not on active duty. 

I was immediately given two choices: Take the flags off my jeep or leave the base immediately. When I asked why, the response didn't make sense. I refused to take the flags off and I refused to leave. 

I didn't believe I was being told correct information. I asked for a supervisor, to be shown in writing why I was being told to leave and for a written report documenting my denial of entry. 

What followed was a 45 minute detainment where eight federal law enforcement officers responded to and engaged a civilian flying two Trump flags on his jeep. Five law enforcement officers were Navy sailors and three were civilian federal police officers. All of these federal law enforcement officers acted under color of law by giving me illegal orders they didn't have the authority to give. There was no authority to demand of me to take the flags down. There was no authority to demand I immediately leave the base since I had done nothing wrong.

When I asked for a supervisor, an explanation that made sense and a written report documenting the situation, I was retaliated and reprised against by way of illegal detainment. My IDs were confiscated and I was run through multiple criminal databases even though, through my military ID, everyone knew who I was.

-I finish asking about the Gadsden flag being flown on base and being a part of every Sailor’s duty uniform
-Officer Scott says I can’t display a Gadsden flag
-I point out that Officer Perry wears the Gadsden flag on her uniform just like every sailor has on theirs
-Officer Scott doubles down and says the flag is prohibited while looking at the Gadsden flag on Officer Perry’s uniform
-Officer Scott insinuates he's just doing his job
-Officer Perry says “the policy” is linked to "the whole protesting thing"
-I state we aren’t talking about protesting
-Officer Perry states flags are nonverbal protests
-I ask What if I had President Lincoln on a flag / Officer Perry says Lincoln wouldn’t be a problem
-I ask Why is the 45th president a problem / Officer Perry says she doesn’t know
-Officer Scott falls back on, again, he's just doing his job / 4th time I’ve been told this
-Officer Scott tells me to write to my congressman
-Officer Scott promises me a report and tells me "it will be sent up, I promise you"
-Officer Scott states "it’s (the detainment) already become a big issue"
-Officer Perry ensures me a report will be written / She steps away
-She comes back and states ""Farmer" is on his way"
-Officer Scott tells me the chief of security is being notified and identifies that person as "Lieutenant Adams"
-Officer Scott says his chief is coming soon and is "making his notifications"
-Officer Scott tells me “they’re going to force you off base because you refuse to leave and you wont take the flags down” and “that will happen”
-Officer Perry says she will send me the case number again
-Chief Tyler Farmer arrives and introduces himself
-Chief Farmer states his guys "are doing the right thing"
-Chief Farmer states the ALLNAV 61/24 has a subsection 4E that declares I am exempt "from all paragraphs above"
-Chief Farmer states i am "free to have a good night" because the policy doesn’t apply to retirees
-I ask how this will be kept from happening again
-Chief Farmer states "We're gonna do more training on it" and "the watch commander is gonna have lessons learned from this"
-Chief Farmer states the policy exemption was “hidden” in ALLNAV 61/24
-Chief Farmer states "we all got lessons learned from this" and "we're sorry we wasted your time"
-Chief Farmer denies my request for a report
-Chief Farmer says a report is not warranted and I'll get a "journal entry"
-Chief Farmer states nothing criminal occurred
-I ask Then why was all my information was taken
-Chief Farmer states it was needed to "make sure all my credentials came back valid", to run me through a database and to send me on my way / As soon as my ID was scanned at the gate everyone knew exactly who I was
-Chief Farmer asks Officer Perry for the “CLEOC” fact sheet
-Officer Perry states “Scott has it” and “he just left for a call"
-Chief Farmer asks me if he can shred the sheet when he gets it / I say yes
