While this idea undoubtedly will strike most people as absurd, there is tantalizing evidence to suggest that something along this line might have some truth to it. Long-standing banking and business connections allowed high-ranking German leaders in 1944 to forge a formidable Nazi-controlled organization for postwar activities. The brackish water of the warm (30 degrees) lakes virtually confirmed that all had an outlet to the sea and would thus have been a haven for U-boats. The two ice-free mountain ranges in Neu Schwabenland presented no worse an underground tunneling project for Organization Todt than anything they had encountered and overcome in Norway. The Germans were the world's experts at building and inhabiting underground metropolis. At the end of the war the United States gave anything concerning Ohrdruf a top secret classification for 100 years upwards. The fact that there had been substantial underground workings there, and Ohrdruf was the location of the last Redoubt, was concealed absolutely. Fortunately for researchers, in 1962 the DDR had taken sworn depositions from all local residents during an investigation into wartime Ohrdruf, and upon the reunification of the two Germanys in 1989, these documents became available to all and sundry at Arnstadt municipal archive. From the Arnstadt documents it is clear that the Charite Anlage unit operated in a three-story underground bunker with floors 70 by 20 meters. When working, the device emitted some kind of energy field which shut down all electrical equipment and non-diesel engines within a range of about eight miles. In 1943, Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz dropped a remarkable phrase: Germany's submarine fleet is proud that it created an unassailable fortress for the Führer on the other end of the world. But the version of Wilhelm Bernhard and Heinz Schäffer saying that the submarines delivered relics to the Antarctica shores (both captains told it at the interrogations held by the American and British intelligence services) seems rather dubious. Later, special services seized a confidential letter of Captain Schäffer to his friend, Captain Wilhelm Bernhard who obviously planned to publish his memoirs. The letter was dated with June 1, 1983. We all made an oath to keep the secret; we did nothing wrong, we just obeyed the orders and fought for our loved Germany and its survival. Please think again: isn't it better to picture everything as a fable? What results do you plan to achieve with your revelations? Think about it, please. Even 40 years after the events, Heinz insisted that Bernhard mustn't say the truth. Is it possible that the submarines delivered something more dangerous to the continent, not Hitler's documents? Could it be the bacteriological weapon traces of which were discovered in Antarctica as unknown viruses in the permafrost last year? NEUBERLIN If you had been a Wehrmacht soldier at the bombed-out railroad station in Poltava, a city in the Ukraine, during the summer of 1942, you may have seen a very strange-looking military unit on the march, heading for a waiting passenger train. The unit consisted of women, all of them blond and blue-eyed, between the ages of 17 and 24, tall and slender, their sensational figures encased in striking sky-blue uniforms. Each woman wore an Italian-style garrison cap, an A-line skirt with the hem below the knee, and a form-fitting jacket with the insignia of the SS. You might have thought the SS had recruited a platoon of high-class call girls, but the truth was far stranger than that. You would have been looking at Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler's latest brainstorm - the Antarktische Siedlungnsfrauen [Antarctic Settlement Women or ASF]. The story actually begins in 1938, when the German seaplane carrier Schwabenland sailed across the South Atlantic, bound for Queen Maud's Land in Antarctica. According to Russian ufologist Konstantin Ivanenko, "The Schwabenland sailed to Antarctica, commanded by Albert Richter, a veteran of cold-weather operations. The Richter expedition's scientists used their large Dornier seaplanes to explore the polar wastes, emulating Admiral Richard E. Byrd's efforts a decade earlier. The German scientists discovered ice-free lakes (heated by underground volcanic features) and were able to land on them. It is widely believed that the Schwabenland's expedition was aimed at scouting out a secret base of operations." A German base was established in the Muhlig-Hofmann Mountains, just inland from the Princess Astrid Coast. The area was renamed Neuschwabenland (New Swabia) and "the base was known only as Station 211. From the movie Schindler's List, people have gotten the idea that killing Jews was the Nazis' main concern. But in actual fact, Hitler and the SS were just as ruthless with the rest of the population in their eastern European empire, thinking nothing of shuffling large numbers of people around in their quest for a more perfect Aryan race. This shuffle was accomplished by a little-known office of the SS called the Rasse und Siedlungshauptamt (German for Race and Settlement Bureau) or RuSHA. In the Ukraine alone, RuSHA drafted 500,000 women for forced labor in the munitions factories of Nazi Germany. It was RuSHA which selected women for Himmler's unit of Antarktische Siedlungsfrauen (Antarctic Settlement Women) About half of the "recruits" were Volksdeutsch-ethnic Germans whose ancestors had settled in the Ukraine in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. The others were native Ukrainians whom RuSHA had "upgraded" to full Aryans. This process was called Eindeutschung (Germanization). According to Ivanenko, There is increased popularity for the idea of a 'German-Slavonic Antarctic Reich.' It is said that 10,000 of the 'racially most pure' Ukrainians, out of half a million deported in 1942 by Martin Bormann, were transported to the German Antarctic bases during World War II, in the proportion of four Ukrainian women to one German man. If true, this would mean that Himmler transferred 2,500 Waffen-SS soldiers, who had proven themselves in combat on the Russian front, to Station 211 - now Neuschwabenland - in Antarctica. This may be the source of the myth of the "Last SS Battalion." An ASF training camp was set up in Estonia, on a peninsula near Ristna on Hiiumaa Island in the Baltic Sea. It was a combination finishing school and boot camp, where the ladies took lessons in charm and housekeeping along with their courses in polar survival. Himmler kept the camp's existence a closely-guarded secret. For "unhappy campers," the only escape consisted of a one-way train ticket to Auschwitz. (There is one known instance of an ASF "deserter." In 1943, Auschwitz guard Irma Griese, 22, the off-and-on girl friend of Dr. Josef Mengele, took to wearing a sky-blue ASF uniform, which she had scavenged from a pile of inmate clothing. Griese was hanged in 1946 for war crimes. The uniform's original owner must have had serious second thoughts about a permanent move to Antarctica). The failure of Grossadmiral Karl Dönitz's U-boat offensive by May 1943 freed up dozens of "milk cow" U- boats. These were large submarines, almost as big as tramp steamers, which Dönitz had used to supply his U- boat "wolf packs" in remote seas of the world. Himmler now put them to work carting supplies and personnel to Antarctica. Himmler's rationale for sending thousands of settlers to Antarctica can only be understood within the context of his mystic beliefs. As a result of his youthful reading of New Age books, his association with the occultist Dr. Friedrich Wichtl, and his membership in the Artamen, Himmler became a believer in the Hindu concept of world-ages or yugas. He believed that the current age, or Kali Yuga, would end in a global cataclysm, thereby giving birth to a new world-age called the Satya Yuga. By sending a Nazi colony to Antarctica, Himmler was ensuring that a remnant of the "pure Aryan race" would survive the coming cataclysm with its society and culture intact. They would then take possession of Antarctica when the cataclysm melted the south polar ice cap. According to believers, the Neuschwabenland colony survived not only the end of World War II, but a full on battle with the 3,500 Marines and aircraft of Operation High Jump. In 2003 Ivanenko wrote: The total population of Nazis in Antarctica now exceeds two million and that many of them have undergone plastic surgery in order to move about with greater ease through South America and conduct all manner of business transactions. He called the Antarctic Reich, "one of the most militarily powerful states in the world because it can destroy the USA several times over with its submarine-based nuclear missiles, remaining itself invulnerable to U.S. nuclear strikes because of the two-mile-thick ice shield." Further, he claims that the city of Neu Berlin, the colony's capital, sprawls through "narrow sub-glacial tunnels" under an unnamed mountain range, heated by "volcanic vents." The ufologist also makes the claim that Neu Berlin adjoins, "the prehistoric ruins of Kadath, which may have been built by settlers from the lost continent of Atlantis well over 100,000 years ago." Still other fringe researchers claim that the actual ruins of Atlantis have been found - and possibly reoccupied - under the Antarctic ice. Some say that Atlantis is located near one of the 70 or so warm water lakes that have been discovered miles beneath the Polar Ice Sheet, such as Lake Vostok near the Russian base at the Pole of Inaccessibility. Another of the oft made claims about Neuberlin is that the city has an Alien Quarter, where Pleiadians, Zeta Reticulans, Reptoids, Men In Black, Aldebarani and other visitors from the stars dwell. As we have seen, the Nazis were working on some very advanced aircraft, some of which may have been capable of leaving the earth's atmosphere. Some researchers are convinced that the Nazis did indeed make it to the moon, and even Mars. Could they have made contact with space aliens once they left the earth? Or, could their rockets, foo-fighters and disk aircraft have attracted aliens to visit them? A claim floats around in modern U.F.O. lore that an extraterrestrial craft with anti-gravity propulsion crashed in the Schwarzwald in the summer 1936, and was recovered by the Nazis who back-engineered it, thus explaining their flying saucer program. This parallels stories of a similarly recovered crashed "saucer" near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, the American back-engineering of which supposedly led to the discovery of the transistor (patented by Bell Laboratories the following year), fiber-optics and other exotic technologies. Ivanenko reported that talk about the Antarctic Reich is "becoming more and more popular" in Russia, Poland, the Ukraine, Belarus and other countries in eastern Europe. He writes, "In the May 10, 2003 issue of the (newspaper) 'Frankfurter Allgemeine', Polish journalist A. Stagjuk criticized Poland's decision to send troops to Iraq" to assist with the Allied occupation. "At the end, he said, 'The next Polish government will sign a treaty with Antarctica and declare war on the USA.'" Ivanenko added that Stagjuk's words were broadcast on the shortwave radio station Deutsche Welle the same week. Some analysts compared this sentence to famous code phrases which started wars in the Twentieth Century, such as 'Over all of Spain, the sky is cloudless' in 1936, and 'Climb Mount Niitaka' in 1941. ("Climb Mount Niitaka" was the signal Admiral Yamamoto sent to Kido Butai, the Imperial Japanese Navy's fleet, to begin the attack on Pearl Harbor.) It is strange to think of a large population living under the ice of Antarctica, totally divorced from the "mainstream" world. Then again, there are Jivaro indigenous people living on Lago de Yanayacu (lake), less than 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Iquitos, Peru, who have never heard of Courtney Love. So, is there a city under the ice inhabited by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the original SS settlers? Or is it just an urban legend stemming from the chaotic conditions that prevailed in Europe during World War II? Some day we may know for certain. NASA AND US NAVY CONDUCT A CLANDESTINE SEARCH IN ANTARCTICA On December 30, 1946, a U.S. Navy patrol plane with a crew of nine, mapping the Antarctic coast as part of a military effort called Operation High Jump crashed in a snowstorm after its radar failed to detect a slope not shown on the charts. Now the U.S. Navy, piggybacking on scientific explorations of western Antarctica, has begun an effort to locate the plane and recover the remains of the crew members who died. The crew members and their plane were part of what remains to this day the largest expedition ever in Antarctica, Operation High Jump, which was led by the renowned polar explorer, Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, and consisted of 13 ships, 23 aircraft and 4,700 men. According to a 1946 Navy memorandum, the mission's goal was 'consolidating and extending U.S. sovereignty over Antarctic areas, investigating possible base sites and extending scientific knowledge in general.' With the Cold War turning more frigid by the month, the venture unnerved the Soviet Union. The Soviet whaling fleet had just begun plying Antarctic waters, and a military publication called Red Fleet warned darkly that the operation was proof 'American military circles are seeking to subject the polar regions to their control.' Argentina and Chile were none too happy, either. Both countries had their own overlapping claims to areas extending from the tip of South America. Their fears of an American incursion were heightened when Chile asked Washington's permission to send an observer along, but was turned down. In their books, written in the 1970s, Wilhelm Landig and "outcast ufologist" Ernst Zündel claimed that Operation High Jump was literally "the last battle of World War II." In Secret Nazi Polar Expeditions (1978) and Hitler at the South Pole (1979), Zündel claimed that Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler had founded an SS colony in Antarctica called Neuschwabenland. The base, known as Point 211, eventually became the Antarctic Reich. Opinion is sharply divided about the final fate of Neuschwabenland. Some argue that the Nazis abandoned their Antarctic sanctuary in the 1960s and moved to sites in the Andes. Another group claims that the Antarctic Reich still exists and has grown into "a civilization under the ice," home to about 3 million people of German and Ukrainian descent. It's supposed to be somewhere in the Mühlig-Hoffman Mountains, adjacent to the ruins of Kadath, a city founded by settlers from the lost continent of Atlantis. The Redemptionists believe that Adolf Hitler escaped from Berlin in April 1945, traveled to southern Argentina in a U-boat, and from there traveled to Neuschwabenland in a Nazi flying saucer. Hitler supposedly lived in Antarctica until 1952, when he reportedly traveled to the moon and met with aliens from space. These aliens took him to Aldebaran, 68 light-years from Earth. According to the legend, some day Hitler will return with an Aldebarani space armada. On November 27, 2004, the Navy undertook "the initial flight... to try to locate the wreckage of the George 1," the plane that crashed in 1946. The search flight, "was a joint one, conducted aboard a Chilean Navy Orion P-3 aircraft with a Chilean crew and NASA scientists working together." "This wasn't just a routine task for us," said Capt. Christian Aldunate, the senior Chilean pilot on the recovery flight. "It was a challenge to find clues that could help locate the plane, even though we knew it would be almost impossible to get at it because of the ice and snow that had piled up over so many years." During an 11-hour flight from and back to Punta Arenas, in the extreme south of Chile, the search plane dipped as low as 500 feet (150 meters) over Thurston Island so scientists could use radar and laser beams to try to locate the remains of the U.S. Navy PBM (Martin) Mariner seaplane. "Even today it's not easy, but we can rely on information from satellite photos, GPS systems and wind predictions," Aldunate said, referring to global positioning networks. "But from the time they took off until the time they arrived in the area, they had no idea what to expect." Though little known in the outside world, the three men who died in the (1946) crash - Wendell K. Hendersin, Maxwell Lopez and Frederick Williams - are still celebrated in Antarctica as heroes. At McMurdo Station, a U.S. research base on the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf, there is a plaque to honor the men, the first Americans to die on any of Byrd's many expeditions. (See the Duluth, Minn. News-Tribune for January 2, 2005, "Navy tries to find plane lost in Antarctica 58 years ago"). There are lines of magnetic force emanating from the South Magnetic Pole. What is strange about the North and South Poles is the way in which the magnetic lines of force move. The magnetic lines of force originate from a "hole" just off the coast of Antarctica. There are Chilean and Peruvian scientists/bases being near or along the route of UFOs emanating from inside the Earth. Many UFOs fly directly south-north along South America. If one draws a line from South America, through the Antarctic bases of Chile, etc through the South Pole to the South Magnetic pole - then you get a straight line. What's interesting about this potential "UFO route" is that UFOs coming from Inside the Earth would end up flying over the America South Pole base. However, the line of flight is such that the only places in the Antarctic where you'd stand a chance of seeing these UFOs is in the "Weddell sea" area where South American countries have their bases and at the Scott Base at the South Pole. The other parts of the UFO route is somewhat offset from the commonly traveled routes and so there's little chance of running into UFOs by accident at any other places. That would explain why the US Govt doesn't like visitors to the South Pole base: It's not that the hole is AT or NEAR the South Pole base (as we originally thought), but along the route from the real hole in the oceans off the coast. Bob Borino, in his article, 'UFO Bases Found in Antarctica' (Globe, Jan. 18, 1983) quotes from certain scientists who believe that a subterranean UFO Base is located beneath the strange 'Polynya Sea' in the Antarctica's Weddell Sea region. The French Agence France Press on 25 September 1946, said: The continuous rumors about German U-boat activity in the region of Tierra del Fuego (Feuerland, in German), between the southernmost tip OF LATIN AMERICA AND THE CONTINENT OF ANTARCTICA are based on true happenings. The newspaper 'France Soir' had the following account: Almost 1-1/2 years. AFTER cessation of hostilities in Europe, the Islandic Whaler, "Juliana" was stopped by a large German U-boat. The Juliana was in the ANTARCTIC region around Malvinas [now Falkland] Islands when a German submarine surfaced and raised the German official naval Flag of Mourning -- red with a black edge. The submarine commander sent out a boarding party, which approached the Juliana in a rubber dinghy, and having boarded the whaler demanded of Capt. Hekla part of his fresh food stocks. The request was made in the definite tone of an order to which resistance would have been unwise. The German officer spoke a correct English and paid for his provisions in U.S. dollars, giving the Captain a bonus of $10 for each member of the Juliana crew. Whilst the food stuffs were being transferred to the submarine, the submarine commander informed Capt. Hekla of the exact location of a large school of whales. Later the Juliana found the school of whales where designated. To address that 1947 story. To this day there has never been any Icelandic whaler in the South Atlantic, let alone in the Antarctica. No Icelandic ship has ever been named Juliana and Hekla is an active volcano in Iceland, not a last name. 99% of all Icelandic last names for males end in "-son". The Hitler-in-Argentina tale is an old one. It first surfaced in a book by Ladislao Szabo entitled "Hitler Está Vivo" (Spanish for Hitler Is Alive) back in 1947. A second book by Michael X. Barton was published in 1969 entitled "We Want You: Is Hitler Alive?" Then Ernst Zündel took up the banner in 1974. Out of these books has sprung the "Saucer Nazi" theories. Both theories agree that Hitler escaped from the Führerbunker in Berlin and fled to Argentina in a U-boat. However, believers in the Antarctic Reich theory contend that Hitler left Argentina in the early 1950s and moved to Neuschwabenland, an SS colony under the ice of Antarctica, right next to the prehistoric ruins of Kadath. Here, they say, Adolf lived out his life, resuming his artist's career and painting a series of Antarctic icescapes. Prior to World War II German scientists were obsessed with Antarctica. Far from finding a desolate wasteland covered with ice, the Germans discovered ice-free areas, warm water lakes and cavern systems. The following passage refers to German efforts to claim a region of Antarctica after Norwegian expeditions in the 1920's and 30's: After these expeditions the Germans also got interested in Queen Maud land [or "Neuschwabenland" as referred to by the Germans], and planned an expedition to declare it as theirs... Anyway, it is still lying there as a remote ice-shelf with lots of high mountains over the glacier. Truly a beautiful land. Queen Maud land is dominated by the giant shelf of ice, flowing slowly from King Haakon VII - plateau over the South Pole, down to the ocean. This area is called "Fenriskjeften" after the mouth of the giant Devil-wolf in Norse mythology. According to this mythology Fenris' (the wolf) teeth were very sharp, and they would kill all people on Earth during Ragnarok - the end of the world. Most of the mountains in Fenriskjeften have names with analogies to teeth, or to other parts of the Norse. The use of wolf symbology is interesting as it touches upon a theme in Nazi symbology which used the wolf as a totem of the hunter-killer: Hitler's retreat in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria was nicknamed "Wolf's Lair" and the tactic used by German U-Boats to defeat convoys during the War was called "Wolfpack." Germany also had allies in South America and South Africa. Many Nazis fled to Argentina following the war and South Africa resembled a Nazi state as racial minorities [including Indians as well as blacks] were subjected to apartheid. Hitler's dream was of a "Thousand-year Reich." Is this a thinly-veiled counterpart to Jesus' Millennial Kingdom? Allied pilots reported seeing "foo fighters" during the latter stages of the World War II. These craft appeared and vanished at incredible speeds and created electrical and magnetic anomalies when close to allied aircraft. These craft are similar to "flying saucers" that were reported initially in 1947. Nazi leaders were known for their obsession with the occult, including astrology and ancient relics. Remember the Indiana Jones movies that used Nazi quests for the holiest relics of the Judeo Christian faith? These movies are based on the occultic practices of Nazis. One relic they were fascinated with [and may possess] was the "Spear of Destiny" that pierced Christ's side on Golgotha. The next movie in the Indiana Jones series is tentatively titled "Indiana Jones and the Lost Continent" an allusion to Atlantis - the antediluvian civilization destroyed by God's flood in Genesis Chapter 6 after the daughters of men were taken by the sons of God as their wives [a reference to "fallen angels"?] Hitler's corpse was never found. Recent reports of "opened KGB files" assert that Hitler's bones were kept and then destroyed by Soviet intelligence. But the current incarnation of Russia is a wolf in sheep's clothing and there is little faith in the KGB [or FSB, its "successor"] veracity. UFO abductee Barney Hill [who in the 1960's was one of the first publicized abductees] claimed under hypnosis that one of his abductors "look[ed] like a German Nazi". Other abductees have claimed seeing Nazi-style decorations or hearing German or German-accented voices as part of their abduction experience. Under "Operation Paperclip" Nazi scientists and intelligence officers were integrated into the military, NASA, and the intelligence community. Wernher von Braun is the most famous and is remembered for being the genius behind the Saturn rockets. The most infamous was Reinhard Gehlen, a Major General in the Nazi Abwehr or intelligence agency. Gehlen was sponsored by the Dulles brothers. John Foster Dulles was a founding member of the CFR and served as President Eisenhower’s Secretary of State; Allen was a president of the CFR, and was the Director of Central Intelligence - head of the CIA - when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Not only has the CIA been implicated in the assassination of JFK, Allen Dulles was a member of the Warren Commission - the investigative body JFK researchers argue was the government’s official cover-up of the conspiracy. German wealth [much of it looted from nations conquered during World War II] was spirited out of Germany. U.S. Undersecretary of Commerce Stuart Eizenstadt reported the following concerning the Nazi Treasury: The evidence presented in this report is incontrovertible. ....The Swiss National Bank and private Swiss bankers knew, as the War progressed, that the Reichsbank's (the German central bank) own coffers had been depleted, and that the Swiss were handling vast sums of looted gold. ("TRANSCRIPT: EIZENSTAT BRIEFING ON LOOTED NAZI GOLD REPORT" United States Department of Commerce. 8 May 1997). When World War II ended, and Europe was being overrun by the allies, the country in charge of each sector of Europe. In our sector, we backed trucks up to the former production facilities and hauled off all the documents. Everyone else did the same thing. Some twelve years later the Australians discovered a 16mm film, a technical report, of the German V-7 research project. The V-7 weapons research project involved circular disk-shaped craft. Now, we knew about programs V-1 through V-4, but we had no previous idea about the V-7 program. The information in this documentary seemed to indicate that the Germans built their first operational disk sometime in the early 1940's in the first production facility in Prague. Then they proceeded to expand their design, development and research teams until by the time the Germans were being driven back into Germany, they had nine research facilities, all with projects under testing. They successfully evacuated eight of those facilities out of Germany, along with the scientists and the key people. The ninth facility was blown up. Now, this 16mm film showed some pictures of flying vehicles in operation. We also knew through intelligence, where I was working at the end of the war, that the Germans built eight very large cargo submarines, especially built, and they were all commissioned, launched and proceeded to disappear without a trace. To this day, we have no idea where they went. They are not on the bottom of the ocean or at any port we know of. It's a mystery, but the mystery might have been solved by this Australian documentary film, which shows large German cargo submarines in the Antarctic with ice flows all around them, and crews standing on deck waiting for tie-up at a quay. We have underground information that some of the research facilities in Germany were taken to a place called "New Schwabenland". Now, Germany was called "Schwabenland" before it was called Germany. So, we are talking about "New Germany", and it is located in an area at the South Pole formerly called Queen Maude Land. Back around 1937, we convened an international conference under the League of Nations at the time to decide to restrict new claims to land in Antarctica. At the time, everyone seemed to have a claim except Germany, who had not staked out a claim but only had some research going on down there. The whole thing was designed to keep Germany from making a land claim as the Nazi's were coming to power. We refused to recognize German claims, which were shown on German maps. A couple of years ago, National Geographic showed the German claim on a map for the first time. But, back in 1939, Göring led an expedition to the Antarctic, including a submarine force, and they took construction and digging equipment down there and began excavating a tunnel complex, and this activity might have been going on since that time. If that is the case, it could be a sizable complex today. That may be where the big cargo submarines are. We believe that at least one or more of the disk research facilities were taken to Antarctica. We had information that one was taken to the Amazon, and that another was taken to the north coast of Norway, where there is a strong German population. Those were taken into secretly maintained underground facilities. Before World War II, the Germans had military advisors all over South America, and when we got into the war we persuaded countries in South America to give up German advisors and accept American ones. Down there, they still prefer the Germans and have never liked us. It is quite possible that some of this material and some of these research facilities were de-centralized to South America as the German empire began to collapse. The big companies like I.G. Farben and the German subsidiary of General Electric opened large subsidiary plants in Rio and Sao Paulo in Brazil, and some of these new facilities became larger that they had been in Germany. So, there would have been support capability for disk research facilities. One has to wonder how much truth there really is to all of this. It appears that some of the craft we see today are nothing more than further developments of German disk technology. So, we may in fact be visited periodically by Germans. One has to wonder how much we are observing is man-made, and how much is truly extraterrestrial technology. Certainly there is some of both, but we don't know what the percentages are. Wendelle C. Mr. Bezmenov, I’d like to begin by having you tell us a little bit about some of your childhood memories." 🔰 Yuri Bezmenov rode on a wave of popularity 40 years ago, when he openly talked about the methods of the Soviet political and ideological warfare against the U.S. Today, this information is still in high demand, not only among CIA experts, but even video game producers, as well. . From the first seconds of the trailer to the newest Call of Duty installment, dubbed Black Ops: Cold War, one can see a vintage video from the 1980s, where an unknown man explains shocking things about the so-called Soviet “active measures” — a complex of actions directed at the gradual weakening and breaking of the U.S. This person is not some actor, but real KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov, who in an interview from 1985 told the U.S. about the psychological warfare Moscow, as he believed, was leading against it. . Bezmenov never warned Americans about the infiltration of the Soviet spy Perseus into the U.S. intelligence network, as the trailer tries to convince us. This mysterious spy, if he ever existed, worked within the Manhattan Project in the 1940s. However, Bezmenov’s stories about KGB’s methods of subjugation of other countries, known as “Ideological Subversion”, really caused a high interest among the American society, CIA and national security specialists in the late 1980s. . Bezmenov couldn’t complain about his life in the Soviet Union. Being a son of a high ranking military officer, all roads were open. However, he became quite disappointed with the Communist reality already as a young man, realizing, as he wrote in his book ‘Love Letter to America’, “that the ideology of Marxism-Leninism is an absolutely false system that produces none of the advantages or benefits of the ‘worker’s paradise’ that it promises.” . A big fan of the East, he devoted his early life to this region and after graduating from the Moscow State University, where he studied India’s languages, culture and history, he was sent to the country to work as a translator and later as a journalist. It was at that time he was recruited by the KGB. . But how did it happen that such a big enemy of the regime and huge admirer of the “free world”, joined the Soviet secret service? “For one thing,” he said, “a Soviet journalist cannot simply say ‘no’ to the KGB. If he wants to remain alive, free, pursue his career and travel abroad, he simply must cooperate with the KGB, or suffer the consequences.” . Another reason was that he hoped “in some way to ‘outsmart them’, to play the game” until he could see more clearly how to proceed. . Yuri Bezmenov soon returned to India, where he worked at a Soviet embassy as a press-officer, but in fact, was involved in creating Soviet sphere of influence in the country, by bribing, corrupting and blackmailing local officials, trying to get into the inner circles of the Indian political elite. . Bezmenov was even appointed as the deputy chief of one of the departments in the secret so-called Research and Counter-Propaganda Group at the New Delhi Embassy. However, he still decided to defect. . On February 8, 1970, he put on hippie clothes and just disappeared to later appear in Canada under the new (with the assistance of CIA) identity as Tomas Schuman. Later, in the 1980s, he moved to the U.S. . This psychological warfare led by the Soviets, according to the defector, had an aim to convince people of the enemy state that all decisions which in fact being made to their own disadvantages are made from their own acceptance and by their own will. The KGB’s task was to turn them into “the homogenized mass of useful and united idiots.” . Bezmenov named four stages of this process. The first is ‘Demoralization’. It takes 15-20 years to demoralize the nation — enough to “educate” one generation of students of the country, expose them to the ideology of the subverter by spreading marxist ideas among them, radicalize them. Agents of influence, secretly Soviet-supported public organizations and movements should promote false heroes and role models in the society, remove the spiritual backbone of the country — religion: commercialize and politicise it, take out its sacredness and turn it into some kind of entertainment, etc. . At the second stage of Ideological Subversion, called ‘Destabilization’, which is planned to last 2-5 years, internal institutes of the target nation fall under pressure by masses of “educated” youth with radical views, who bring a deep crisis into the political, economical and social life of the country. The state is forced to turn into a “Big Brother”, which accommodates all power in its hands, removing traditional American values, such as freedom, “division of powers” and labour movement. The foreign policy of the target state is paralyzed by internationalism and isolationism, which leaves it no choice but to improve its relations with the USSR. . It will take only several months to undertake stage three — the so-called ‘Crisis’. During it, radicals and “sleeper” Soviet agents try to “seize power as quickly and ruthlessly as possible”. If the two previous stages of Soviet subversion have been successfully completed by that time, the majority of Americans will be so totally confused that they may even welcome new “strong” leaders who “know how to talk to the Russians”. The change of power, says Bezmenov, can then be achieved by a civil war and Soviet intervention is not even needed. . During the final phase — what Bezmenov dubs ‘Normalization’ — “friendly” Soviet soldiers will walk in the streets of the U.S. cities working together with American soldiers and the “new” police force to “restore law and order”. Former revolutionaries, who yesterday took power, are no longer in need and will be sent to prisons or liquidated — “The ‘useful idiots’ will have completed their work…” The country is completely under Soviet control and joins the club of Vietnam, Nicaragua and North Korea. Game over. . Bezmenov’s influence If things really got so bad, what could the former KGB agent advise Americans? “The most general solution I can offer — for the whole process of SUBVERSION — is to STOP AIDING THE SUBVERTER. You are still living in a free society and you are able to force your elected politicians to change their policies towards the Communist world if you so choose,” he said. . “There are numerous American patriotic groups and organizations who are well informed and who already have many SOLUTIONS, to combat the damage done by ideological subversion some of which are as good or even better than mine. This film is a collaboration between Canadian land patent expert, Doug Force and musician Timm Stein, that documents how there is no lawfully-established independent country called Canada. Doug Force further asserts that no confederation happened, because the provinces had never been sovereign states. . Furthermore, the Canada Act of 1982 is an act of British Parliament that was never ratified. In order to do so: . 1. All provinces would need to sign Schedule B of the Act, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. 2. Québec would need to authorize a proclamation to enact Section 23.1.(a) of the Act. 3. Section 23.1.(a) Would be enacted through a proclamation. 4. Section 59.(3) would be enacted through a proclamation to repeal Section 59 and renumber the Act. 5. Section 58 would be enacted through a procalamation to pass the Act. . Doug Force says none these steps have been completed. In addition, the Royal Proclamation 1982 is only a proclamation stating that there will be a proclamation in the future. He says nothing was passed and therefore, nothing was enacted and that, “There is no Constitution. There is no Charter of Rights and Freedoms!” . Note that a charter differs from a constitution in this that the former is granted by a foreign government while the latter is established by the people, themselves. . Doug Force walks us step-by-step through the history of Canadian law and he explains how in the Interpretations Act 1985, Canada is defined as the “internal waters of Canada and the territorial sea of Canada” and the land is not included, because they lost access to the land when the Dominion ended with the 1931 Statute of Westminster, which he calls “The most important document in the history of the landmass known as Canada!” in which he claims the land was naturally returned to the people. . The Nazis took over the city of Stalingrad, which was finally liberated by Russian troops in November 1942. In February 1943 the German troops surrendered. The broader implications to our understanding of history here are massive. To summarize: I've come to believe, quite strongly over time, that there existed a highly mobile and highly proficient population subset, which has been alternately labeled 'Royal Scythian', 'Arya/Aryan', or a handful of other names by various scholars and historians, that wielded immense power and shaping influence across a millennia or more - whose lineage cultivated the most immense and widespread power and influence, stretching at various times from the furthest west in Europe to the furthest easternmost point of Asia, and whose most direct lineal descendants can be found today in modern Europe, and her modern offshoots. I believe the very concept of 'royalty' and sacred Kingship stems exclusively from this subset, and has left it's lasting mark across the majority of the world. I've also come to believe that the traces of this immense power and influence have been increasingly and aggressively obscured in modern texts - to the extent that it appears to be a purposeful effort, at some level. There's perhaps no subject matter in which I've sensed more deeply strange unfairness in modern academic circles, more bias and blatant inaccuracy, than in that of the 'Arya', and the related concepts discussed in this video. By whom, and to what end, represent questions we won't get into in this video. That said, I'm perhaps a bit hard on modern academia as a whole, here, so I'd like to make clear: I certainly don't believe that every last individual in these spheres is a conscious subversive, or willfully and knowingly dishonest. In fact, I think several are likely well-meaning and genuine. There's simply an academic and scholarly structure currently in place that only allows certain types of people with certain ideological leanings through the door in the first place - in the current atmosphere, if you disagree, you're not being 'scholarly' at all, by definition. Scholarly 'legitimacy' and aptitude is now directly equivalent to how fully one is willing to embrace the current conventional notions.. which means those with dissenting opinions are effectively and organically shut out. Over time, this only further exacerbates the problem, of course. Modern scholarship seems willing to make use of any conceivable conceptual framework - pottery types, burial traditions, artistic styles, etc - except the one framework that seems to most effectively make sense of the past, and connect the dots and answer the outstanding questions that have baffled so many for so long. I'd contend the fracturing of this larger people family into countless shards (Andronovo, Srubnaya, Corded Ware, Yamnaya, etc) is only helpful if we're also willing to first recognize the powerful ties that bind, and thus not 'miss the forest for the trees'. Credit and appreciation to Christopher Beckwith for an intriguing book well written - and I hope my so heavily quoting it isn't an unwelcome change of pace in these videos - though I'd like to make the point that the core conclusions here are entirely my own, and that his excellent work was only used to help build (solidify) this larger context picture. I'm not certain of his broader views on these many topics, and wouldn't want to misrepresent them. Lastly, I feel the need to comment once more on just how muddled and disorienting the language in these realms has become. 'Scythian' has devolved from a descriptor of an ethnic family described as the 'oldest people in the world' in the first written histories, with the closest ties to the 'Hyperboreans', used to reference a massive people family north of Greece and Persia and India, and then being widely used as a universal term for the ancestors of European mankind - to a narrow and niche descriptor of small bands of heavily mixed steppe populations who came to occupy the area post 300-400 AD, with little connection to modern Europe, somehow.. all in the span of just a handful of decades, post WW2. No matter what one may wish to LABEL them, my hope is that we begin to recognize the 'Occam's razor' likelihood of a singular population whose offshoots would go on to heavily influence (and often rule, loosely and non-tyrannically) the majority of the ancient world, at various points in time. I'd suggest that only through this lens does history begin to make *sense*, add up, cohere. I grew up believing, as I'm sure many of you did, that European peoples essentially milled about in the forests of NW Europe, superstitious and primitive (and creating a wide range of 'gods' accordingly), while the rest of the world made history around them. I can't stress enough how profoundly and obviously dishonest this narrative is. I hope these works might play some part in rectifying these modern judgment errors and manipulative storylines - I've come to believe they're purposeful, borderline insidious, and ultimately serve the purpose of robbing us of our history, and a genuine understanding of ourselves and our ancestors. By James DiEugenio In 1968, CIA Director Richard Helms was presented with a disturbing National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) stating that Israel had obtained atomic weapons, a dangerous development that occurred earlier than the CIA had anticipated. It was particularly dangerous because just the year before, the Six Day War had marked the beginning of open hostilities between the Israelis and Arab nation states. To prevail, Israel had launched preemptive air attacks against Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq at the start of the conflict. Considering that violent backdrop, Helms immediately arranged a meeting with President Lyndon Johnson to inform him of this troubling milestone. The man who had prepared the NIE and gave it to Helms was the CIA’s chief science and technology officer, Carl Duckett. After Helms met with Johnson, the CIA Director told Duckett about the President’s rather odd reaction. LBJ did not get upset, and he did not order an investigation into how it happened. Further, he did not tell Helms to let both the Defense Department and State Department know about it so they could establish intelligence inquiries or consider sanctions. Instead, Johnson did the opposite. He told Helms to keep the news secret and specifically told the Director not to let the secretaries of State or Defense know about it. Helms obeyed the orders of his Commander in Chief, but he decided to talk to the FBI about how this development had occurred earlier than expected. Thus begins Roger Mattson’s Stealing the Atom Bomb: How Denial and Deception Armed Israel, the riveting story of duplicity, betrayal, cover-ups and deceit. As the book shows, the cover-ups and duplicity did not just come from Israel and its agents in America. The deceit also came from men inside the American government who, for whatever reasons, decided to cast a blind eye on what was really happening under their jurisdiction, even after they had been alerted to it. What Mattson reveals is no less than an atomic heist – one that could have been prevented if men in high positions had done their duty. Highly Enriched Uranium After Johnson told Helms not to tell State or Defense, the CIA Director called Attorney General Ramsey Clark, because what made this news even more ominous — and a potential crime — was what the CIA had discovered when it conducted a chemical test around the Israeli nuclear reactor at Dimona, in the Negev desert. Duckett had concluded that Israel had something that they should not have possessed at that time: HEU, or highly enriched uranium, which could only be produced by one of the five major powers that already had nuclear weapons. But the test had also revealed characteristics that showed the material had originated in the United States. (Mattson, p. 97) Specifically, the HEU came from Portsmouth, Ohio and then was further processed at a plant in Apollo, Pennsylvania. The importance of this information was that the HEU was processed to such a degree – well over 90 percent U 235 – that it was classified as weapons grade uranium. The technical term for it is the acronym SNM, or Special Nuclear Material, meaning that it is fissile: it can easily be split with neutrons. Although the Portsmouth plant is shut down today, beginning in 1956 it did produce weapons-grade uranium. It was in Apollo, Pennsylvania, that the trail of the SNM and the crime of its diversion becomes exceedingly suspect. The plant that did the further processing of HEU, and the ultimate shipping, was named Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation, or NUMEC, and there were a number of reasons why suspicion had centered on NUMEC even before Helms called Clark. First, NUMEC had a rather unreliable record when it came to keeping track of HEU and other materials that had been given to it through the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The way the system worked is that the particular company would forward its business requests — from either private or governmental agencies — to the AEC. The AEC would then estimate how much nuclear material NUMEC would need to fulfill the contract. If a company was using up more material than the AEC properly estimated, that company would be fined quite a lot of money. If the shortages persisted, the AEC and the FBI could then open up an investigation. With CIA’s discoveries, the possibility presented itself that a diversion of the nuclear material could be taking place. Either someone from the outside was stealing the material, or someone on the inside was embezzling it. As Mattson shows with charts, graphs and testimony, NUMEC had an extraordinarily bad record in this regard. The company was eventually fined over $2 million for missing materials, which, with inflation factored in, would be about $15 million today. Mattson adduces that from 1959 to 1977, about 345 kilograms of HEU went missing from NUMEC, which translates to well over 700 pounds. (ibid, p. 286) Explaining the Deficits In just one year, there was a loss of over 56 kilograms (or about 123 pounds). The company made up all sorts of rationales as to why this much HEU was missing, including losses during the mechanical processing. But as the author points out, there are two problems with this accounting. First, no other plant in America reported losses of this magnitude. The AEC concluded that the losses at Apollo were more than double what they were at any other comparably sized atomic plant in the U.S. (ibid, p. 65) Secondly, even if one chalks up some of the missing HEU to a processing loss, that still does not account for the entire record of NUMEC. Mattson figures that, even giving the company the benefit of the doubt, it still leaves about 200 pounds of missing HEU. (ibid, p. 67) That’s enough for about six atomic bombs, larger than the one used on Hiroshima. As Mattson reports, what makes NUMEC an even more intriguing suspect is the fact that the company had some legitimate business transactions with Israel, concerning the irradiation of plants. And these legitimate packages were sent at about the time the HEU went missing. Further, the inventory records at NUMEC were extremely sloppy and some appear to have been destroyed in direct violation of the AEC code, meaning NUMEC should have been cited, but wasn’t. (ibid, p. 75) That brings us to the founders of the NUMEC plant in Apollo, Pennsylvania, a small town of approximately 1,600 people that lies about 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. In 1955, the Apollo Steel Plant was purchased by David Lowenthal. Two years later, Lowenthal and Zalman Shapiro cooperated in forming NUMEC. Shapiro, a very accomplished metallurgist who lived next door to Lowenthal, had been employed for a number of years at the nearby Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, which supported the AEC’s Office of Naval Reactors. In May 1958, Lowenthal merged Apollo Steel with the San Toy Mining Company in Maine. San Toy then changed its name to Apollo Industries, with the main operating officers of this new corporation Morton Chatkin, Ivan Novick and Lowenthal. (ibid, p. 43) The board comprised these three men plus Shapiro, and later others. In the early 1960s, the steel plant’s name was changed to Raychord Steel, but with the decline of the steel industry, Raychord became a subsidiary company to Apollo. Ties to Zionist Groups Novick, one of Apollo’s officers, later served as national president of the Zionist Organization of America, in which Chatkin, another officer, also held a leadership role. The ZOA was a member group of the American Zionist Council, which later became the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which today is considered to be the leading lobbying group for Israel and one of the most powerful lobbying groups in Washington. Novick also later served as a personal liaison between Ronald Reagan’s White House and the administration of Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Lowenthal, who was born in Poland in 1921, came to America in 1932 and served in the American armed forces in World War II, eventually becoming a citizen in 1945. After the war, he worked with the Haganah, the Jewish paramilitary force inside Palestine, on the Zionist mission to ferry Jews into Palestine in 1947 on board the boat SS Exodus. Since almost none of the passengers had legal immigration certificates to enter Palestine, the British Royal Navy, which ran the Palestinian Mandate, seized the ship and deported its passengers back to Europe. Lowenthal’s mission was a practical failure, but a tremendous propaganda success for the Zionist cause. The event was novelized by author Leon Uris in the number-one best-selling book Exodus, which was published in 1958 and was made into a movie two years later by director Otto Preminger, starring Paul Newman. Lowenthal later served on board the ship Pan York, which also attempted to evade the British quarantine but was captured in Cyprus with the crew arrested, including Lowenthal. He escaped and fled to Palestine where he served with the Haganah during the war that broke out there in 1948 after the British abandoned the mandate early. (ibid, p. 44) Lowenthal ended up serving under the legendary Meir Amit, the leading intelligence officer in Israel during the 1960s. Lowenthal was also personally acquainted with future prime ministers David Ben Gurion and Golda Meir. Nuclear Experience Shapiro, who had advanced degrees in chemistry and metallurgy from Johns Hopkins, worked for Westinghouse and the Navy on the nuclear reactor that powered America’s first atomic submarine, the Nautilus. Shapiro also helped develop the fuel for the first commercial nuclear reactor, the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in Pennsylvania. Like Lowenthal, Novick and Chatkin, Shapiro also was active in supporting Israeli causes, although his activities had a slightly educational tone. He was a member of the Technion Society, which supported advances in Israeli science and technology. Indeed, he became an Honorary Life Member of the group. He also was a Director of Hillel, an international organization that tries to acquaint Jewish students with each other on campuses and organize student trips to Israel. Like Novick and Chatkin, he was a member of the Zionist Organization of America. Many years later, it was discovered that Shapiro was on the Board of Governors of the Israeli Intelligence Center, which honors spies for Israel who clandestinely advanced the interests of the state. (Mattson, p. 84) Beyond the individual backgrounds of these four men, there was also something else which should have attracted the U.S. intelligence community’s attention prior to Helms’s meeting with President Johnson. While running NUMEC, both men – Shapiro and Lowenthal – were taking trips to Israel and had contacts with high officials of Israeli intelligence as well as Israel’s version of the AEC. Further, NUMEC had a guest worker, an Israeli metallurgist, in its plant, as part of an agreement NUMEC had with Israel to serve as a training consultancy which resulted in the formation of a joint company with Israel called ISORAD that initially was to deal with irradiation of citrus fruits through gamma rays. But the FBI later discovered that NUMEC also had contracts with Israel for the development of plutonium oxide as fuel elements in nuclear reactors. (Mattson, pgs. 80-81) Since Lowenthal had so many acquaintances in high positions, he often visited Israel, including a most curious instance at about the time he purchased Apollo Steel in 1956. It was at this time that Israel was making decisions about foreign sourcing for nuclear materials and technology. A year later, NUMEC was formed and Shapiro immediately applied for a license from the AEC to process uranium fuel in a building formerly occupied by Apollo Steel. John Hadden, CIA station chief in Tel Aviv, later noted the unusual coincidence of these events on two continents. (ibid, p. 45) Israeli Visits But declassified FBI files reveal that the visitations were not just one way, i.e. from Apollo, Pennsylvania, to Israel. There were also visits and meetings of Israeli officials who went to Apollo. At the time of those meetings, there were four main branches of Israeli intelligence. The Shin Bet corresponded with the Federal Bureau of Investigation; the Mossad with the Central Intelligence Agency; the Aman roughly with the Defense Intelligence Agency; and the LAKAM, which was responsible for security at Dimona and for procuring scientific and technological data from Western sources. (Mattson, p. 108) In the mid-1960s, France started scaling back its support for the Dimona reactor, which was supposedly a research facility. With France’s pullback, LAKAM began seeking out and purchasing parts and supplies from other sources to complete the project. LAKAM’s job included concealing the reactor’s true function – the development of a nuclear bomb – from American inspections. (ibid) During an American inspection in 1964, LAKAM even created a “Potemkin village” control room to deceive the visitors. Unlike American intelligence, Israel also had a special operations unit that served all branches. Established in 1957, it was run by Rafi Eitan and his deputy, Avraham Bendor. (In the 1980s, Eitan became notorious for the Jonathan Pollard spy case, in which Pollard, a navy intelligence employee, was paid tens of thousands of dollars to spy for Israel in the United States with Eitan his ultimate control agent.) In September 1968, the AEC told the FBI that they were giving permission to NUMEC for a visit by four Israelis, including Eitan and Bendor. However, in the application to the AEC, the occupations of the two were disguised. Eitan was said to be a chemist in the Defense Ministry; Bendor supposedly worked for the electronics division. (ibid, p. 110) The other two men were Avraham Hermoni, who was billed as a Scientific Counselor in the Israeli Embassy in Washington, and Dr. Ephraim Biegun, described as working in the Division of Electronics for Defense. Again, this was misleading. Hermoni did, at times, work out of Washington’s Israeli Embassy, but his prime and most important function was overseeing and planning Israel’s nuclear weapons program, which he did from 1959-69. Biegun was actually head of the technical division of the Mossad from 1960-70. CIA Suspicions After the visit, NUMEC reported that the four men were in Apollo to buy thermo-electrical generator systems. (ibid, p. 119) Why Eitan and Bendor had to be there for that purpose is not readily apparent. CIA officer John Hadden thought the real reason for the visit was that Shapiro was divulging top-secret technical information about plutonium manufacture – and that he was aided in this by the visiting Israeli scientist working at NUMEC. The FBI later came to agree that this was most likely the true reason for the visit. (ibid, p. 120) Hermoni revisited Shapiro in November 1968, but the capstone to the visits to Apollo came later that month. As noted previously, France had cut back on its support for Dimona in the mid-1960s, halting the supply of uranium fuel in 1967. In late November 1968, the Mossad arranged a covert operation called Operation Plumbat, which employed a front company in West Germany to purchase 200 tons of uranium yellowcake from Belgium. The transaction was approved by Euratom, the European organization controlling such transactions, but once the transport ship set sail for the port of Genoa, Italy, it was intercepted by another ship used by the Mossad. When the original ship reached port, the hull was empty. The timing of this operation, on the heels of the mysterious visits by Israeli intelligence agents to Apollo, seems to constitute powerful circumstantial evidence of Israeli intentions. Then, right after the completion of the Plumbat mission, who arrived in Israel? None other than Zalman Shapiro. The FBI discovered that in November 1968, in addition to the personal visits, Shapiro was in frequent phone contact with a number of Israeli intelligence agents, including Hermoni. (Mattson, p. 126) A Longstanding Goal Israel’s long trail of subterfuge and duplicity was part of a longstanding goal. As early as 1948, David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, stated that what Einstein, Teller and Oppenheimer did for America, they could easily do for Israel, since they were all Jews. In fact, he offered Einstein Israeli citizenship, which the great man declined. (ibid, p. 22) Ben-Gurion then had two meetings with Oppenheimer and numerous ones with Teller. Ultimately, Israel settled on David Bergmann, a brilliant chemist whom Ben-Gurion appointed first chief of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission in 1952. By 1955, Bergmann was essentially running the day-to-day operations of Israel’s atomic program. In a conversation with the American ambassador, Bergmann said the Israeli science education program was adequate in physics and chemistry but weak in engineering and non-existent in metallurgy. He also revealed that the design he had laid out for a reactor was the same as the one at Shippingport, Pennsylvania, an intriguing clue because Shapiro was a metallurgist and had worked on the Shippingport power station. Indeed, Shapiro eventually met Bergmann and the two became close friends and colleagues, serving on the board of ISORAD, which was a joint venture of NUMEC and the IAEC. Bergmann made his first visit to America for IAEC in 1956, the year before Lowenthal turned Apollo Steel into NUMEC. There were two significant investigations of Shapiro and NUMEC. The first was instigated by Dick Helms’s call to Ramsey Clark in 1968 and the discovery of the highly enriched uranium at Dimona. (Mattson, p. 99) The second began in 1976 when Jim Conran, a whistleblower at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, voiced complaints about the background and actions of Shapiro. Conran was a security officer and his warnings eventually got the attention of the White House. (ibid, p. 161) During the first investigation, the FBI could not find enough evidence to justify a violation by Shapiro of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which mandates that any person in the U.S. who is representing a foreign country’s interests has to register with the Justice Department. But the FBI did recommend cancelling Shapiro’s security clearances, based on wiretaps that revealed Shapiro in close contact with Israeli intelligence officials and with members of the IAEC. (ibid, p. 138) During these calls Shapiro reportedly said he would help Israel in any way that he could. He also expressed frustration with the new ownership at NUMEC, which had been purchased by ARCO. But his Israeli contacts said he was too valuable to leave and encouraged him to stay there. (ibid, p. 139) FBI Surveillance One of the most curious episodes that the FBI surveillance revealed was a meeting between Shapiro and a man named Jeruham Kafkafi, a suspected Mossad officer working under diplomatic cover. He had left Washington by air on the morning of June 20, 1969, and met Shapiro at the Pittsburgh airport for about an hour. He then left and flew back to Washington. As a result of that surveillance, Shapiro was interviewed by the AEC in August 1969, with some of Shapiro’s answers to questions rather dubious. For instance, he said he did not know Hermoni was in charge of the Israeli nuclear development program and thought he was a university professor. Shapiro said his discussions in September and October 1968 with the Israeli officers were about water contamination, saboteur detection and military activities. When asked why the Israelis could not have talked to the Defense Department about those topics, Shapiro had no answer. The interviewer wrote in his summary that Shapiro was cool and calm throughout except when the Kafkafi meeting was brought up. At first, Shapiro said he could not recall it, even though it happened just two months earlier. He then said he did remember it, claiming it was about an overdue invoice and a power supply resource. (p. 142) The AEC investigators did not find the last reply credible, since it did not seem to justify an airline flight from Washington to Pittsburgh and back. Shapiro adjusted his answer by saying that there was some discussion of an investigator whom he knew from America who was going to visit Israel. He also added the figure of $32,000 as to how much Israel owed NUMEC. As Mattson notes, again, this explanation does not seem to justify an air flight and an hour-long meeting with a clandestine Mossad officer. Closing the Inquiry The man who ultimately decided to close this initial inquiry was Glenn Seaborg, head of the AEC. Not only did he not see any civil or criminal charges as being viable, but when President Richard Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell recommended revoking Shapiro’s security clearances, Seaborg balked at that also. Mattson clearly sees Seaborg as being a villain in the piece. Late in the book, he explicitly accuses him of running a cover-up. (see p. 297) And, there is evidence to back up this charge. It was later discovered, during the second inquiry, that Seaborg had a close personal friendship with Shapiro. (ibid p. 268) Earle Hightower, assistant director of safeguards at AEC, explicitly stated that the whole case regarding NUMEC was rigged because it was known that Seaborg would not take action. Little more than three years after Seaborg left the AEC, it was dissolved in 1975 and was replaced by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in part, because critics accused the AEC of an insufficiently aggressive regulatory program. The second, much longer, and more vigorous inquiry into NUMEC and Shapiro came about at the creation of the NRC when Jim Conran was tasked with reviewing the record of how safeguards had worked previously for the AEC so they could be strengthened in the future. In that review process, he came across the case of Shapiro and NUMEC. When Conran asked to see more files on both, he was denied access, causing him to go up the NRC ladder to Chairman William Anders, who was briefed by, among others, Carl Duckett of the CIA. Since Anders was about to leave for a diplomatic post, he took his concerns to James Connor at President Gerald Ford’s White House. In March 1976, the CIA’s Duckett addressed an informal gathering of pilots and astronauts, saying there was little doubt Israel had about 20 nuclear warheads. Although this was supposed to be off the record, the information leaked. In April 1976, Time reported that this claim was accurate, except the newsmagazine put the size of the arsenal at 13 bombs and added that the warheads could be delivered by Phantom jets or Jericho missiles. Duckett wrote a memo to CIA Director George Bush in which he said he suspected that the Israeli program was jumpstarted by a diversion of enriched uranium from the NUMEC plant. (p. 165) He attached various appendices to the memo to show the results of previous inquiries into NUMEC and explain why his belief was justified. One of the appendices consisted of a paper by John Hadden in which he expressed the suspicion that NUMEC was actually a shell company the Israeli government had set up for the express purpose of diverting materials, technology and information that Israel needed to speed up and facilitate its longstanding quest for atomic weapons. (ibid, p. 166) A New Investigation Attorney General Edward Levi was then sent a summary of the FBI’s previous investigation of NUMEC. Levi alerted Ford that he thought NUMEC was culpable for several crimes and, with Ford’s permission, he wished to begin a criminal inquiry. Since Ford’s close adviser James Connor was also disturbed by these findings, the President approved the investigation. What followed was a tedious bureaucratic battle between the CIA and FBI. The FBI felt it did not have direct proof that a diversion had taken place, while the CIA had the proof — the chemical tests at Dimona — but was reluctant to reveal the intelligence to the FBI. Also, the CIA did not want to furnish the FBI with technical experts to help educate the investigating agents so they could effectively cross-examine important witnesses. Thus, the FBI’s inquiry dragged on through three presidents: Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. But even with these obstructions, the FBI did eventually find witnesses to a diversion from the Apollo plant. It turned out that the FBI did not do enough interviews of plant employees in its initial inquiry because there were at least four of them willing to talk. Those witnesses form the climax of Mattson’s book. In 1980, one witness said that when he read newspaper accounts about the losses of enriched uranium at Apollo, he had to chuckle to himself. When asked why, he replied that in 1965 or 1966, he was walking near the loading dock at Apollo and saw people loading containers – the dimensions that were used for HEU packets – into equipment boxes. He noticed that the shipping papers for the boxes revealed that the packages were destined for Israel. This witness then suggested some other workers at the plant who had seen similar activity. (Ibid, p. 272) Suspicion Shipment One of these witnesses saw a flatbed truck backed up into the loading dock area with Shapiro pacing around the area while the driver was loading “stove pipes” into a cabinet on the truck. This struck the witness as odd because the plant had regularly assigned workers for loading duties during the day but this shipment was being prepared in the evening. He explained that “stove pipes” were cylindrical containers that the plant used to pack enriched uranium inside. Each stove pipe usually contained three or four packets of HEU. When he glanced at the clipboard resting on a package, he saw the destination was Israel. The clipboard then was yanked away and an armed guard escorted him off the dock. He also said it was unusual to see Shapiro in this area of the plant, and further, that Shapiro was very seldom there at night. (ibid, p. 275) There were two other witnesses who told the FBI about similar events. The FBI also interviewed an NRC inspector named James Devlin, who told the agents that, contrary to what Shapiro had said, the security at the Apollo plant was below par and that NUMEC did not employ a professional security force. The company had one regular armed guard and Devlin happened to know who he was, since he was also a deputy for the township. The only other guards were unarmed and non-uniformed. (ibid, pgs. 272-73) By this time, the FBI did not want to continue the investigation, believing that nothing would come of it, although the Justice Department urged the investigators on. But the FBI was correct since, as Mattson notes more than once in his book, the last president who really wanted to stop Israel from becoming a nuclear power was John F. Kennedy. (See pgs. 38-40, p. 256) Richard Helms’s conversation with a disinterested President Johnson underscores how that attitude changed after Kennedy’s death. As Mattson further notes, opposition to Israel’s nuclear-weapons program was more or less negated by President Richard Nixon’s meeting with Prime Minister Golda Meir in 1969 when he agreed that the U.S. would not make any public statements revealing Israel’s nuclear arsenal nor demand that it sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty, as long as Israel did no testing and made no public threats. Even that policy was probably violated in 1979 with the Vela Incident: a suspected Israeli nuclear test done in the Indian Ocean. Author Roger Mattson was part of the inquiry about the illegal transfer of atomic secrets to Israel, working in the NRC’s safeguards department when Conran first voiced his fears about a diversion at NUMEC. Thus, Mattson became part of an internal review of the Shapiro case, seeing firsthand how certain intelligence agencies were, by accident or design, obstructing the investigation. Mattson concludes his important book by stating that this policy of casting a deliberate blind eye towards a nuclear heist by Israel places the U.S. in a compromised position when trying to enforce a policy of non-proliferation on other nations because of the obvious double standards. To point out one paradox, the U.S. government executed Julius and Ethel Rosenberg for purportedly supplying nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union with less evidence. Plus, the tinder box of the Middle East is probably the last place where America should have allowed atomic weapons to proliferate, but it did. Their practices were similar to those of priests today, connecting the people with the gods, but their role was also varied and wide-ranging, acting as teachers, scientists, judges and philosophers. They were incredibly powerful and respected, able to banish people from society for breaking the sacred laws, and even able to come between two opposing armies and prevent warfare! They did not have to pay taxes or serve in battle. Druid women were also considered equal to men in many respects, unusual for an ancient community. They could take part in wars and even divorce their husbands! One of the earliest accounts of Druids was written by Julius Caesar in 59-51 BC. He wrote it in Gaul, where prestigious men were divided into Druids or nobles. It was from the Roman writers that historians have gained most of their knowledge of the Druids. Druids were polytheistic and had female gods and sacred figures, rather like the Greeks and Romans, but their nomadic, less civilized Druidic society gave the others a sense of superiority. This renders some of their accounts historically uncertain, as they may be tainted with exaggerated examples of Druidic practices. But until we finally managed to visit it in 1969, its origins remained a complete mystery to science. Analysis of samples brought back from the NASA Apollo missions suggest that the Earth and Moon are a result of a giant impact between an early proto-planet and an astronomical body called Theia. Here are other Moon Origin Theories - There used to be a number of theories about how the Moon was made and it was one of the aims of the Apollo program to figure out how we got to have our Moon... Prior to the Apollo mission research there were three theories about how the Moon formed. The evidence returned from these missions gave us today's most widely accepted theory. Capture theory suggests that the Moon was a wandering body (like an asteroid) that formed elsewhere in the solar system and was captured by Earth's gravity as it passed nearby. The accretion hypothesis proposes that the Moon was created along with Earth at its formation. The fission theory suggests Earth had been spinning so fast that some material broke away and began to orbit the planet. The giant-impact theory is most widely accepted today. This proposes that the Moon formed during a collision between the Earth and another small planet, about the size of the planet Mars. The debris from this impact collected in an orbit around Earth to form the Moon. Proto-Earth and Theia - Before Earth and the Moon, there were proto-Earth and Theia (a roughly Mars-sized planet). The giant-impact model suggests that at some point in Earth's very early history, these two bodies collided. During this massive collision, nearly all of Earth and Theia melted and reformed as one body, with a small part of the new mass spinning off to become the Moon as we know it. Scientists have experimented with modelling the impact, changing the size of Theia to test what happens at different sizes and impact angles, trying to get the nearest possible match. Scientists are now tending to gravitate towards the idea that early Earth and Theia were made of almost exactly the same materials to begin with, as they were within the same neighborhood as the solar system was forming. If the two bodies had come from the same place and were made of similar stuff to begin with, this would also explain how similar their composition is. A balancing influence Having a moon as large as ours is something that's unique in our solar system. While other planets have tiny moons, the Earth's Moon is almost the size of Mars. If you look at other similar planets to ours, they wobble quite a lot in their orbit (the North Pole moves) and as a result the climate is much more unpredictable. The Moon has helped stabilize Earth's orbit and reduced polar motion. This has aided in producing our planet's relatively stable climate. 'It's a subject of quite a lot of scientific debate as to how important the Moon has been in making it possible for life to exist on Earth.' Moon fact: The biggest moon-quakes Apollo astronauts ever recorded registered 5.5 on the Richter scale and lasted for over 10 minutes. As this is enough to damage buildings here on Earth, any future Moon base will need to be super-sturdy. Scientists generally believe that the Moon consisted of molten magma in its very early history. Heavy metals sank to form the core. Then, as it cooled, crystals began to form within the magma. Denser minerals sank down to later form the mantle, whereas lighter minerals floated to the surface to form the crust. What is left today is a small solid iron-rich core surrounded by a layer of liquid magma. Enveloping the core is a thick solid mantle 1,350 kilometers deep that makes up most of the Moon’s volume. And wrapping the mantle is a roughly 50-kilometre-deep crust, which is on average even thicker than the Earth’s. #prehistoric #science #space

We risk creating a horizon devoid of lofty mountains, their peaks reaching up to the heavens, and instead find ourselves in a landscape of undifferentiated flatness—dull, uninteresting, devoid of motivating or inspirational power, and in a very real sense, lifeless. Confucianism was named after its founder, Confucius (an anglicization of K’ung-fu-Tzu or Master K’ung). For Confucius, it was important to bring back the ideals and tenets of the Zhou period. Those who adhere to Confucianism see it as a moral and social ethos. Confucianism has profoundly influenced the spiritual and political lives of the Chinese people throughout the centuries. Korea, Vietnam, and Japan are just a few East Asian countries that have felt its impact. 3. Zoroastrianism Zoroastrianism Religion Historians believe the reforming prophet Zoroaster (Zarathustra) lived between the 10th and 6th century BCE. Still, the religion we know today, Zoroastrianism (known to residents as Mazdayasna), evolved from his teachings around the 2nd millennium BCE (they disagree somewhat). Until the Muslim invasion in the 7th century C.E., it was the official religion of different Persian empires. It is still practiced today by an estimated 200,000 individuals in portions of Iran, India, and Iraq. Yazdânism: Yazdânism (Cult of Angels) is a neologism that encompasses three distinct Kurdish religious traditions (practiced by the Yazidis, Goran, and Ishik Alevis) that originated from a synthesis of Islam and a Hurrian forerunner to Zoroastrianism. They make sense of the prophets of the Abrahamic religions, reincarnation, and the idea that seven ‘angels’ protect the planet from evil. This suggests that these faiths are at least as ancient as Zoroastrianism. 4. Yahwism and Judaism Judaism Religion Over four thousand years ago, the Hebrew people followed a religion called Yahwism. Abraham was the first Yahwist when Yahweh commanded him to establish a country. The patriarch, who would shape the lives of Hebrews for millennia, was formed in part by his son and grandson, Isaac and Jacob. The Israelite nation may trace its lineage back to these people. After hundreds of years of Egyptian slavery, Moses finally released the Israelites in God’s direction. The Jewish legal code may be traced back to the ten commandments that Moses delivered to the Israelites. Yahwism evolved into modern Judaism over time. Judaism originated in the Middle East circa 2085 B.C. and is rooted in Moses’s teachings and the Ten Commandments. The Jewish people turned to the five books of the Torah, which tell the story of the world from its beginnings through Moses’ death, for spiritual guidance and guidance in living their lives. 5. Buddhism Boudhanath Stupa, Nepal Two thousand five hundred years ago, in what is now Nepal, a prince named Siddhartha Gautama is said to have given birth to Buddhism. Upon first seeing human misery, Siddhartha abandoned his privileged lifestyle. Sitting under the Bodhi tree, he reflected on the purpose of life, reached enlightenment, and became the Buddha (the tree of awakening). Since then, every Buddhist has followed their nonviolent teachings and sought the way to enlightenment. Buddhists are encouraged to begin their quest for liberation from the cycle of birth and death by contemplating the four noble truths, which are as follows: Existence is suffering (dukhka); suffering has a cause, namely craving and attachment (Trishna); there is a possibility of cessation of suffering, which is nirvana; there is a path to the end of suffering. 6. Jainism Jainism Religion The Indian religion of Jainism, which inspired both Buddhism and Confucianism, originated in the Ganges area of modern-day India. Tirthankaras, according to Jain belief, are those who have achieved complete control over their baser emotions, including wrath, pride, dishonesty, and want. But in any half-cycle of human history, there can be no more than 24 Tirthankara. Two human eras are divided into four phases, according to Jainism. For Jains, time is symbolized by the rotation of a wheel. One generation is equal to one whole revolution. It is believed that the 24 Tirthankara are distributed evenly over the two halves of the eternal wheel of time. A historical record shows that 599 B.C. marked the birth of Mahavir Swami, the 24th and last Tirthankara of the current cycle. According to Jainism, the first Tirthankara of the next and previous half cycle would be born very soon. 7. Taoism China Taoism Religion Originating in China between the years 450 and 500 A.D., Taoism spread across the world. It evolved from ancient Chinese customs and beliefs. Those who established Taoism saw the growth of Buddhism as a danger to traditional Chinese culture and set out to counter it. The first adherents of Taoism were members of the educated and rich elite, but as time passed, the religion also gained followers from the working class. Thus, several subsets of Taoists have their particular rituals and tenets. For instance, Ch’üan-Chen Taoism, a branch of Taoism popular among women, is one example. The Tao, literally “the path,” refers to the ultimate principles at work in the universe. Taoism and the Yin Yang symbol, which represent the universe’s ongoing capacity for change and development, are compatible. The crane is another emblem, this one standing for finality. The Taoist notion of sham, or goodness, motivates the practice of self-improvement and self-control. Both a central figurehead and a canonical text are lacking in Taoism. Because many Taoist components originated from indigenous rituals and its priests worked as ceremonial leaders rather than preachers of a message from a higher power, the religion never established a central set of ideals. 8. Shintoism Japan Shintoism Religion Shintoism is a direct descendant of the animistic folk religion of the Yayoi, whose culture spread from north of Kyushu to the rest of Japan from the 3rd century BCE onward. However, the religion was not codified until 712 CE in response to touch with mainland religions (namely, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism). Present-day adherents adhere to a coherent interpretation of ancient Japanese mythology with clear Buddhist elements (though only a small minority identify it as an organized religion). I think it’s important to note that there is no universally accepted definition of religion. Therefore, the question of how old a religion is will always depend on the purpose used. Since all spiritual traditions build on ancient beliefs, their fundamental distinctions lay in the degree to which they have been formalized and standardized and in the length of time through which their broader principles have been in place. Therefore, Neopaganism and Mexicayotl (a contemporary revival of ancient faiths) are not included, nor are the many animistic and shamanistic traditions (including the Chinese folk religion, which lacks coherence and is partially founded on Taoist and Confucian ideas). Atheism is also left out of the discussion, even though it has been around since at least the sixth century BCE (though we assume it predates even the first religious ideas). Conclusion Understanding how religion has changed through time and into the contemporary world is an enormously interesting journey. Many people’s worldviews and the paths they pick in life are profoundly influenced by their religious beliefs. Grasping the world’s earliest faiths allows us to evaluate the merits of the concepts and ideas we’ve decided to scrap and the ones we’ve deemed worthy of keeping. Religion has been a factor of the human experience throughout history, from pre-historic to modern times. The bulk of the human religious experience pre-dates written history. Written history (the age of formal writing) is only roughly 5,000 years old. A lack of written records results in most of the knowledge of pre-historic religion being derived from archaeological records and other indirect sources, and from suppositions. Much pre-historic religion is subject to continued debate. Religious practices in prehistory Middle Paleolithic (200,000–50,000 BCE) Despite claims by some researchers of bear worship, belief in an afterlife, and other rituals, current archaeological evidence does not support the presence of religious practices by modern humans or Neanderthals during this period. 100,000 BC: Earliest known human burial in the Middle East. 78,000–74,000 BC: Earliest known Homo Sapiens burial of a child in Panga ya Saidi, East Africa. 70,000–35,000 BC: Neanderthal burials take place in areas of Europe and the Middle East. 50th to 11th millennium BC 40,000 BC: The remains of one of the earliest known anatomically modern humans to be discovered cremated, was buried near Lake Mungo. 38,000 BC: The Aurignacian Löwenmensch figurine, the oldest known zoomorphic (animal-shaped) sculpture in the world and one of the oldest known sculptures in general, was made. The sculpture has also been interpreted as anthropomorphic, giving human characteristics to an animal, although it may have represented a deity. 35,000–26,001 BC: Neanderthal burials are absent from the archaeological record. This roughly coincides with the appearance of Homo sapiens in Europe and decline of the Neanderthals; individual skulls and/or long bones began appearing, heavily stained with red ochre and separately buried. This practice may be the origin of sacred relics. The oldest discovered "Venus figurines" appeared in graves. Some were deliberately broken or repeatedly stabbed, possibly representing the murders of the men with whom they were buried, or owing to some other unknown social dynamic. 25,000–21,000 BC: Clear examples of burials are present in Iberia, Wales, and eastern Europe. These, too, incorporate the heavy use of red ochre. Additionally, various objects were included in the graves (e.g. periwinkle shells, weighted clothing, dolls, possible drumsticks, mammoth ivory beads, fox teeth pendants, panoply of ivory artifacts, "baton" antlers, flint blades etc.). 13,000–8,000 BC: Noticeable burial activity resumed. Prior mortuary activity had either taken a less obvious form or contemporaries retained some of their burial knowledge in the absence of such activity. Dozens of men, women, and children were being buried in the same caves which were used for burials 10,000 years beforehand. All these graves are delineated by the cave walls and large limestone blocks. The burials share a number of characteristics (such as use of ochre, and shell and mammoth ivory jewelry) that go back thousands of years. Some burials were double, comprising an adult male with a juvenile male buried by his side. They were now beginning to take on the form of modern cemeteries. Old burials were commonly re-dug and moved to make way for new ones, with the older bones often being gathered and cached together. Large stones may have acted as grave markers. Pairs of ochred antlers were sometimes mounted on poles within the cave; this is compared to the modern practice of leaving flowers at a grave. 10th to 6th millennium BC 9130–7370 BC: This was the apparent period of use of Göbekli Tepe, one of the oldest human-made sites of worship yet discovered; evidence of similar usage has also been found in another nearby site, Nevalı Çori. 7500–5700 BC: The settlements of Çatalhöyük developed as a likely spiritual center of Anatolia. Possibly practicing worship in communal shrines, its inhabitants left behind numerous clay figurines and impressions of phallic, feminine, and hunting scenes. 7250-6500 BC: The ʿAin Ghazal statues were made in Jordan during the Neolithic. These statues were argued to have been gods, legendary leaders, or other figures of power. They were suggested to have been a representation of a fusion of previously separate communities by Gary O. Rollefson. Ancient era Extent and major sites of the Indus Valley civilization. The shaded area does not include recent excavations. 3200–3100 BC: Newgrange, the 250,000 short tons (230,000 t) passage tomb aligned to the winter solstice in Ireland, was built. 3100 BC: The initial form of Stonehenge was completed. The circular bank and ditch enclosure, about 110 metres (360 ft) across, may have been completed with a timber circle. 3000 BC: Sumerian Cuneiform emerged from the proto-literate Uruk period, allowing the codification of beliefs and creation of detailed historical religious records. The second phase of Stonehenge was completed and appeared to function as the first enclosed cremation cemetery in the British Isles. 2635–2610 BC: The oldest surviving Egyptian pyramid was commissioned by Pharaoh Djoser. 2600 BC: Stonehenge began to take on its final form. The wooden posts were replaced with bluestone. It began taking on an increasingly complex setup (including an altar, a portal, station stones, etc.) and shows consideration of solar alignments. 2560 BC: This is the approximate time accepted as the completion of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest pyramid of the Giza Plateau. 2494–2345 BC: The first of the oldest surviving religious texts, the Pyramid Texts, was composed in Ancient Egypt. 2200 BC: The Minoan civilization developed in Crete. Citizens worshipped a variety of goddesses. 2150–2000 BC: The earliest surviving versions of the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh—originally titled He who Saw the Deep (Sha naqba īmuru) or Surpassing All Other Kings (Shūtur eli sharrī)—were written. 1700–1100 BC: The oldest of the Hindu Vedas (scriptures), the Rigveda was composed. This is the first mention of Rudra, a fearsome form of Shiva as the supreme god. 1600 BC: The ancient development of Stonehenge came to an end. 1500 BC: The Vedic period began in India after the collapse of the Indus Valley Civilization. 1351 or 1353 BC: The reign of Akhenaten, sometimes credited with starting the earliest known recorded monotheistic religion, in Ancient Egypt. 1300–1000 BC: The "standard" Akkadian version of the Epic of Gilgamesh was edited by Sîn-lēqi-unninni. 800–300 BC: The Upanishads (Vedic texts) were composed, containing the earliest emergence of some of the central religious concepts of Hinduism and Buddhism. 1200 BC: The Greek Dark Age began. 1200 BC: The Olmecs built the earliest pyramids and temples in Central America. 877–777 BC: The life of Parshvanatha, 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism. 800 BC: The Greek Dark Age ends. 8th to 6th centuries BC: The Chandogya Upanishad is compiled, significant for containing the earliest to date mention of Krishna. Verse 3.17.6 mentions Krishna Devakiputra (Sanskrit: कृष्णाय देवकीपुत्रा) as a student of the sage Ghora Angirasa. 6th to 5th centuries BC: The first five books of the Jewish Tanakh, the Torah (Hebrew: תורה), are probably compiled. 6th century BC: Possible start of Zoroastrianism; however some date Zarathustra somewhere between 1400-1200 BC. Zoroastrianism flourished under the Persian emperors known as the Achaemenids. The emperors Darius (ruled 522–486 BC) and Xerxes (ruled 486–465 BC) made it the official religion of their empire. 600–500 BC: The earliest Confucian writing, Shu Ching, incorporates ideas of harmony and heaven. 599–527 BC: The life of Mahavira, 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism. c. 563/480 – c. 483/400 BC: Gautama Buddha, founder of Buddhism was born. 515 BC - 70 AD: Second Temple period begins. The synagogue and Jewish eschatology can all be traced back to the Second Temple period. 551 BC: Confucius, founder of Confucianism, was born. 447 BC: The Parthenon is dedicated to the goddess Athena. 399 BC: Socrates was tried for impiety. 369–372 BC: Birth of Mencius and Zhuang Zhou 300 BC: The oldest known version of the Tao Te Ching was written on bamboo tablets. 300 BC: Theravada Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka by the Venerable Mahinda c. 250 BC: The Third Buddhist council was convened by Ashoka. Human sacrifice was practiced on a grand scale throughout the Aztec empire, which was performed in honor of their gods. 1320: Pope John XXII laid the groundwork for future witch-hunts with the formalisation of the persecution of witchcraft. 1378–1417: The Roman Catholic Church split during the Western Schism. 1415: The death of Jan Hus who is considered as the first reformer of the Western Christianity. This event is often considered as the beginning of the Reformation. 1469–1539: The life of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism. 1484: Pope Innocent VIII marked the beginning of the classical European witch-hunts with his papal bull Summis desiderantes. 1486–1534: Chaitanya Mahaprabhu popularised the chanting of the Hare Krishna and composed the Shikshashtakam (eight devotional prayers) in Sanskrit. The Republic also replaced the traditional Gregorian Calendar and abolished Christian holidays. c. 1790–1840: The Second Great Awakening, a Protestant religious revival in the United States. 1791: Freedom of religion, enshrined in the Bill of Rights, was added as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, forming an early and influential secular government. 1794: the Cult of the Supreme Being in France is founded by Maximilien Robespierre. 19th century 1801: the French Revolutionary Government and Pope Pius VII entered into the Concordat of 1801. While Roman Catholicism regained some powers and became recognized as "the religion of the great majority of the French", it was not afforded the latitude it had enjoyed prior to the Revolution and was not re-established as the official state religion. The Church relinquished all claims to estate seized after 1790, the clergy was state salaried and was obliged to swear allegiance to the State.
