An Irish teacher who refused to use a student’s preferred pronouns has been jailed for a third time. Enoch Burke, an Irish teacher, was found guilty of repeatedly violating a court order to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School in County Westmeath. Burke, who refused to use the student’s pronouns due to his Christian beliefs, has already spent over 400 days in jail for contempt of court. Burke was arrested outside the school, while his family and supporters shouted ‘shame’ at the police, accusing them of facilitating child abuse. Burke’s mother, who led the protests, called on parents at the school to ‘please stand up for your children.’

Burke continued to show up at the school daily since August 22, despite being on paid suspension, something the court deemed ‘disruptive.’ The judge ordered Burke's return to Mountjoy Prison in Dublin, and accused Burke of ‘exploiting his imprisonment.’ Burke, however, maintained that the court’s actions also went against his religious beliefs, and claimed teachers were being forced to ‘endorse transgenderism’ against their will. Burke’s supporters have also accused Judge Michael Quinn of being in league with LGBTQ charities.

Burke has been fined €88,000 ($97,000) for breaching the court order but continues to receive his teaching salary while the case is appealed.
