Ticket To Ride (Beatles, The, 1965). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-08-30. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Ticket To Ride," written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, was The Beatles' 8th no. 1 chart topping hit on the Billboard Hot 100 landing at the top position in 1965 (Whitburn, 2013). This was the first Beatles' release that was over 3:00 in length (3:10) (songfacts, 2023). Don Short, a person who traveled with The Beatles, stated that John Lennon told him that the song was about "the girls who worked the streets in Hamburg [who] had to have a clean bill of health and the authorities would give them a card saying they were clean. Don later said that although he specifically recalls John telling him that, John could have been joking" (songfacts, 2023). However, according McCartney, the title referred to a British railways ticket to the town of Ryde, on the north-east coast of the Isle of Wight in England (beatlesebooks, 2023).

Lyrics:

I think I'm going to be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's driving me mad is going away

She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
And she don't care

She said that living with me
Was bringing her down, yeah
For she would never be free
When I was around

She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
And she don't care

I don't know why she's riding so high
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to saying goodbye
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
I think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's drivin' me mad
Is goin' away, yeah

Ah, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But she don't care

I don't know why she's ridin' so high
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to sayin' goodbye
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me

She said that livin' with me
Was bringin' her down
Yeah
She would never be free
When I was around

Ah, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But she don't care

My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
