First Of May - Bee Gees (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
First Of May (Bee Gees, 1969). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-08-11. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"First Of May," written by Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb, was the Bee Gees' 8th top 40 hit peaking at no. 37 in 1969 (Whitburn, 2013), but in the UK it rose to no. 6, no. 1 in Holland and top 10 in most of Europe, South Africa and New Zealand (P. Sexton, udiscovermusic, May 1, 2024). "First of May" was the only charting single released in the USA from the album "Odessa" and was the reason for Robin Gibb's 15 month departure from the group; he was championing the song "Lamplight," on which he sang lead, but the Barry Gibb lead vocal tune "May" was chosen by manager Robert Stigwood instead, angering Robin (P. Sexton, udiscovermusic, May 1, 2024). The title of the song is based on Barry Gibbs' dog's [Barnaby] birthday (T. Roxborogh, roxboroghreport, May 1, 2014).

Lyrics:
When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
we used to love while others used to play.
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
some one else moved in from far away.
Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small,
and you don't ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
but guess we'll cry come first of May.
The apple tree that grew for you and me,
I watched the apples falling one by one.
And I recall the moment of them all,
the day I kissed your cheek and you were mine.
Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small,
and you don't ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
but guess we'll cry come first of May.
When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
do do do do do do do do do...
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
some one else moved in from far away.
