After several weeks being stuck in trenches outside of Petersburg, VA, Union High Command grew creative to try and end the stalemate. On July 30, 1864, 8,000 lbs of gunpowder was detonated beneath part of the confederate trench lines. In theory, this would create a opening to defeat the Army of Northern Virginia. In reality, lack of confidence amongst the superiors meant haphazard preparation, culminating in one of the US Army's gravest disasters.
