You Can't Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones, The, 1969, 1973). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-08-04. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"You Can't Always Get What You Want," written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, was released on the Rolling Stones' "Let It Bleed" LP in 1969 clocking in at 7:30 minutes (Whitburn, 2006). It was also released, in a shortened 5:00 minute version, as the "B" side of a single with "Honky Tonk Woman" as the "A" side before the release of the album; but in 1973, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was rereleased as the "A" side and it peaked at no. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (Whitburn, 2013). The London Bach Choir provided the intro to the album version of the song, and Al Kooper played the organ and french horn for the tune because Brian Jones was unable to perform due to drug issues (songfest, 2024). Their producer, Jimmy Miller, played the drums for the song because the Stones' drummer, Charlie Watts "couldn't play the groove" according to Jagger (R. Reed, ultimateclassicrock, Nov. 29, 2019). Sadly, Brian Jones died in his swimming pool (July 3, 1969) the day before the single was released (July 4, 1969) (G. Marcus, rollingstone, Aug. 9, 1969; secondhandsongs, 2024).

Lyrics:

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you might find
You get what you need

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
I said to him

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need

You get what you need, yeah, oh baby

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need, oh yeah
