"I Melt With You ," written by Richard Brown, Michael Conroy, Robbie Grey, Gary McDowell and Stephen Walker, was Modern English's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1983 peaking at no. 78 and then a revamped version was released in 1990, which stalled at no. 76 (Whitburn, 2013). It did rise to the no. 7 position on the Billboard Rock chart and no. 18 on the UK Indie chart in 1983 (Wikipedia, 2024). Robbie Grey, the lead vocalist, stated: "'I don't think many people realized [the song] was about a couple making love as the bomb dropped. As they made love, they become one and melt together' . . . he wrote the lyrics stream-of-consciousness style in just minutes while he was sitting on the floor of a London flat in 1982. So even he isn't sure what some of it means. Said Grey: 'I like that line, 'Trapped in a state of imaginary grace.' Who knows what I was on at that point" (songfacts, 2024).
