Jalal ad-Din Rumi (1207-1273) is a Persian poet known simply as Rumi. He is one of the most popular poets in the world. Rumi was also a mystic, belonging to the Sufi tradition in Islam. He wrote in Persian, Turkish, Arabic, and even (at times) Greek. These "Romantic Poems" were written by Sappho, a Greek poetess from the island of Lesbos (c. 630 – c. 570 BC). Sappho is known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung while accompanied by music. "A Lament For Adonis" is a poem written by the ancient Greek poet (poetess) Sappho (c. 630 – c. 570 BC). Sappho has become an icon for lyric poets. Adonis was the beautiful youth who was loved by Aphrodite, the goddess of love. According to the myth, he was killed by a wild boar during a hunting trip and died in Aphrodite’s arms as she wept for him. The poem is a lament, so it’s full of weeping, tears, and grief.
