Walkin' In the Rain (Jay & the Americans, 1969; The Ronettes, 1964). Live performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI.
2024-06-11. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Walkin' In the Rain," written by Barry Mann, Phil Spector, and Cynthia Weil, was Jay [Black aka David Blatt] & the American's last top 40 hit rising to the no. 19 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the winter of 1969; The Ronettes version was released in 1964 and stalled at the no. 23 position on the Billboard chart (Whitburn, 2013). Veronica "Ronnie" Bennett recorded her vocal for the Ronettes' version in one take. She stated: "when it came to the vocal, I went in the booth, closed my eyes and - boom! I said, "Shall I do it again?' And they said, 'No, that was it'" (songfacts, 2024). As an aside, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (of Steely Dan fame) joined Jay Black as part of the American's touring group in the 1970s (classicbands, 2024).

Lyrics:

I want her
I need her
And someday, some way, whoa
I'll meet her
She'll be kinda shy
And real good lookin' too
And I'll be certain she's my girl
By the things she'll like to do

Like walkin' in the rain
And wishin' on the stars up above
And being so in love

When she's near me
I'll kiss her
And when she leaves me, whoa
I'll miss her
Though sometimes we'll fight
I won't really care
I know she's gonna be alright
'Cause we got so much to share

Like walkin' in the rain
And wishin' on the stars up above
And bein' so in love

(Joannie) no, no she'll never do
(Peggy) no, it isn't her too
They would never, no they'd never
Never, ever love

Walkin' in the rain
And wishin' on the stars
Or bein' so in love
Walkin' in the rain
