For the 21st year in a row, Nicaragua has been looking for its largest pregnant woman. The ‘Madre Panza’ (‘Belly Mother’) competition is held every year in the capital Managua on Mother’s Day to celebrate motherhood, and involves measuring bumps to see who is the most spectacularly pregnant.

This year’s winner was Ana del Pilar Peña Jarquín, who measured 55cm from sternum to pubis (the standard metric for pregnant women competitions), but she thinks the bump has got more growing to do yet. ‘I think my second belly was bigger because I am not even 8 months pregnant yet,’ she said. ‘My scheduled delivery date is June 14.’ Peña Jarquín was an outsider for the title, but romped home to victory after the two favorites both accidentally gave birth before the competition.

The event is organized by La Nueva Radio Ya and carries a small cash prize and a new washing machine.
