Chinese university shows off robot guide dog

Robot dogs, contrary to popular opinion, aren’t just used for gun-toting evil. They can also be used for good, as demonstrated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. A team at the university has unveiled a 6-legged guidebot, intended to help visually impaired people just like a real guide dog.

The robot (who hasn’t been given a name, so we’ll call him Jim) can identify and avoid obstacles, navigate stairs, and respond to human voice commands within a second. Jim can also identify traffic lights, unlike real dogs, who are colorblind. According to the team, Jim will be set for a trial run as early as November, and, if successful, will help to drastically cut the waiting times for guide dogs.

Jim is also less likely to chase cars and do his business up against lamp posts.
