"Mellow Yellow," written by Donovan Leitch, was Donovan's second release to hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart rising to the no. 2 position in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). A rumor at the time was that the song was about getting high on banana skins by cooking them and inhaling the fumes, which wasn't the case; actually, Donovan stated that generally the song was about being laid back and cool. He also said that he and John Lennon "used to look in the back of newspapers and pull out funny things and they'd end up in songs. So it's [also] about . . . the electrical bananas that were appearing on the scene - which were ladies vibrators" (songfacts, 2023).
