Spain’s deputy prime minister has drawn criticism from Jewish commentators after ending a speech with the words, ‘Palestine will be free from the river to the sea.’ Yolanda Díaz, who also serves as Labor and Social Policy minister, delivered a video address following Spain’s announcement that it would recognize the state of Palestine, and ended with the pro-Palestine slogan.

The Israeli embassy in Spain has slammed the speech, writing on X that it ‘completely rejects Yolanda Díaz’s statement,’ calling it ‘anti-Semitic.’ The Federation of Spanish Jewish Communities, meanwhile, accused Díaz of ‘encouraging hatred and rejection’ towards Jews.
During her speech, Díaz accused Israel of ‘barbarism’ and called for the European Union to be pressured to ‘end its agreements and treaties with Israel.’ Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, will officially recognize the Palestinian state starting May 28.
