The violence that erupted in New Caledonia sparked a rise in global nickel prices, as the territory is among key producers of the essential metal used in batteries, electric vehicles and other devices.

It appears this is why France isn’t willing to loosen its grip on the archipelago. So, colonialism isn’t dead?
