🍄 Meet The Shaggy Ink Cap 🍄
Also known as the Lawyer’s Wig or Shaggy Mane, the Shaggy Ink Cap (Coprinus comatus) is a fascinating fungus that’s as quirky as it is edible. With its tall, white, and shaggy appearance, this mushroom is a common sight on lawns, gravel roads, and waste areas.
When young, its cylindrical cap is mostly white, adorned with shaggy scales that are paler brown at the apex. As it matures, the cap opens out, revealing gills that change from white to pink and eventually to black. In a dramatic finale, the gills deliquesce into a black liquid filled with spores, giving it the “ink cap” name.
But catch it before the show’s over! When young, it’s an excellent edible mushroom, but it must be eaten soon after collection due to its rapid self-digestion. It’s a culinary race against time!
👩🍳 Edible Tip: If you’re looking to savor this mushroom, quick processing is key. Saute, simmer, or microwave it right after picking to extend its shelf life in the fridge or freezer.
🌱 Did You Know? This mushroom species is cultivated in China as food, and its unique self-dissolving feature has intrigued mycologists and chefs alike!
