🍄 Meet The Shaggy Ink Cap 🍄
Also known as the Lawyer’s Wig or Shaggy Mane, the Shaggy Ink Cap (Coprinus comatus) is a fascinating fungus that’s as quirky as it is edible. With its tall, white, and shaggy appearance, this mushroom is a common sight on lawns, gravel roads, and waste areas.
When young, its cylindrical cap is mostly white, adorned with shaggy scales that are paler brown at the apex. As it matures, the cap opens out, revealing gills that change from white to pink and eventually to black. In a dramatic finale, the gills deliquesce into a black liquid filled with spores, giving it the “ink cap” name.
But catch it before the show’s over! When young, it’s an excellent edible mushroom, but it must be eaten soon after collection due to its rapid self-digestion. It’s a culinary race against time!
👩🍳 Edible Tip: If you’re looking to savor this mushroom, quick processing is key. Saute, simmer, or microwave it right after picking to extend its shelf life in the fridge or freezer.
🌱 Did You Know? This mushroom species is cultivated in China as food, and its unique self-dissolving feature has intrigued mycologists and chefs alike!

Nature’s Engineer: Slime Mold’s Remarkable Railway Design
Discover the astonishing capabilities of slime mold in this eye-opening clip featuring mycologist Paul Stamets. Watch as he explains how this simple organism outsmarted human ingenuity by optimizing the layout of Japan’s railway system. The experiment showcases the power of biomimicry, where a slime mold was tasked with mapping out the most efficient routes between food sources representing Tokyo’s urban centers. The result? A network strikingly similar to the actual Tokyo Metro, demonstrating that sometimes, nature’s solutions are the most ingenious.

Amethyst Deceiver (Laccaria Amethystina)
The Amethyst Deceiver (Laccaria amethystina) is a small, strikingly purple mushroom found in both deciduous and coniferous forests. Despite its vibrant color, it’s known as the “deceiver” because its color can fade, making it hard to identify, especially since it resembles the poisonous Lilac fibrecap. It’s generally safe to eat but can absorb arsenic from the soil, so foraging should be done with caution. You can find it from August to November, thriving in the leaf litter of woodlands.
