The US authorities appear to hope to salvage ties with Niger, stating that ‘the intent is in Niger to draw down to a level that the Nigeriens can live with’ – all while the African state ordered all American soldiers to pack up and leave. We hear from former Nigerien ambassador Kalla Karimou, who says that if the US wishes to engage with Niger, it must consider the interests of the Nigerien people.
