Rahan.
The son of the ferocious ages.

Episode Eighty-Four.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Andre Cheret.

The Heads of Horn.

The man that the son of Crao had just discovered must have been attacked by a "Front of Wood."
He only had a moment to live.
Zumka. Zumka. I want to die there.
With the. With mine behind the hill.
Take me there.

This is the only thing Rahan can do for you, Brother!
Zumka, Zumka.
He had me.

These were the man's last words.
And Rahan froze before the spectacle presented to him.
He was undoubtedly a leader.
And his clan worships the “Fronts of wood”!

Page Two.

Bamboos lined a strange necropolis.
The first was crowned with deer antlers, the second of reindeer antlers, and the last of elk.
The hunters of this territory perhaps think that these totems protect their dead?

He had just placed the body near the tangled skeletons.
When.
The flame-haired enemy has killed Xoar!

Men appeared from all sides, armed with reindeer horns.
Leave the enemy to Yako!
It is up to Yako to avenge Xoar!

Xoar was slaughtered by a “Front of Wood”!
Lies! Defend yourself!
Encircled, Rahan had to face the man adorned with reindeer antlers, another leader no doubt.

You are nimble and fast, “Fire Hair”!
But you will not escape Yako!
Kong!
The tibia which he had seized parried the blow of the formidable weapon.

Page Three.

Ten times the son of Crao thus dodged the chief's attacks.
What are you waiting for to draw your weapon!?
Rahan does not steal the life of “Those Who Walk Upright”!

But he knows how to defend his own!
Smack!
The blow cooled Yako's ardor.

But his opponent, tripping over a skull, collapsed on the bones!
Ha-ha-ha!
You chose your place to die well “Fire hair!

The reindeer horn came down with such force that his tibia-shield was shattered.

The time has come for you to join the “Territory of Shadows”!
Yako was about the deliver the fatal blow!

Page Four.

But the son of Crao did not let him have the time.
You will see death before Rahan! Look at that!
Argh!

Dazed, Yako swayed.
But his people rushed forward, and overpowered Rahan.
You already have killed Xoar!
We will not allow you to kill Yako!

I could slit your throat easily but this death would be too sweet for an enemy of your kind!
I want to see you moan and beg in front of the whole clan!

Shortly after, the captive appeared in front of another leader, this one sporting deer antlers.
There is no evidence that this hunter killed Xoar.
But you are head of the clan just like me, Yako.
I cannot rise up against you!

Rahan was tied in the middle of the village and flogged by Yako until the evening.
The pain was unbearable and yet not a single complaint escaped him.

Page Five.

Enough, Yako!
A hunter who shows such courage would have confessed long ago if he had really killed Xoar!
Release him!

An approving murmur arose, and Yako, bowing, freed the captive.
Rahan thanks you for putting an end to this torture!
So you are the real leader of the clan?

No, Our clan had three leaders, Xoar, Yako and myself.
There are only Yako and I left since Xoar was killed, without doubt, while trying to approach the "Great wood"!

“Great Wood?” What is the “Great Wood?”

Many times ours have tried to approach this extraordinary beast.
But none succeeded.
And many died!

Page Six.

But, the "wooden fronts” are numerous!
Why go after this one?
Because its antlers are magical, my son!

Whoever touches them, even for a moment, will inherit the vigor of the “Great Wood”!

And an old chief like me would love to find this strength!
The son of Crao did not believe in these superstitions, but the old man's sadness moved him.

You intervened on Rahan's behalf earlier.
Rahan will show his gratitude to you by capturing the great wood!
You can touch its horns.

Rahan immediately started hunting.
He wandered all night, and despite the darkness, just by feeling the ground, he discovered a trail.

Page Seven.

It was at daybreak that he saw the herd, near a point of water.
Oh!
The “Great Wood!”
The old chief did not lie!

The male who led this herd was enormous and his antlers were gigantic.
Sensing danger, he bellowed to keep his flock away.

Then he rushed towards the man who was preparing his lasso of vines.
It is not this beast that Xoar faced!
He would have been cut in two by these horns!

Ra-ha-ha!
In a double reflex, the son of fierce ages dodged the charge.
And projected the loop of vine.

But it was not in his power to restrain an animal of such force!
He was dragged on the ground.

Page Eight.

He hit a stump violently.
The weight of it suddenly slowed down the movement of the giant deer.
Argh! You will not run away for much longer!

The vine was tied to the burden with incredible speed.
You won't go any further "Great Wood!"
Fatigue will quickly get the better of you!

The deer, in fact, quickly become exhausted.
And the son of Crao was already preparing other lassos.

At the same time near the village.
Yako is dead! slaughtered! Like Xoar!

“Fire hair” Lied to you, Zumka!
He did not go hunting down the "Great Wood"!

But he killed Yako in revenge for the flogging!
You are right. I should never have trusted that cheat!

Page Nine.

Rahan was returning when he saw the clan dispersing.
Why these cries of hatred?
Why do they still want Rahan?

From the hut of the old chief who had supported him, noises arose.
He approached it cautiously.
Is this old man still on the side of Rahan?

Rahan kept his promise to the old one!
The “Great Wood” is taken.
Ten arrow gates from here!

Is it true!?
The magic horns are here.
To my disposition?
Take me to the “Big Woods” my son! Quickly! Quickly!

A little later.
I suspected you would succeed, “Hair of Fire”!
I was not wrong about you!

Page Ten.

Suddenly.
Death to “Hair of Fire!” Kill him!
First kill the “Great wood!” Its horns will adorn my hut!

Kill the Great wood?!
Rahan did not capture him so that he would die, but only so that you could touch his horns!
Ha-ha-ha! How naive you are!

For more seasons than all these fingers, I have dreamed of possessing its marvelous horns!

And it was only because I sensed an unusual hunter in you that I protected you!
But now I don't need you anymore and you are going to die!

You will die for slaughtering Xoar and Yako!
Come, my brothers, kill!
It is your chief Zumka who orders you to do it!

Page Eleven.

Zumka!
The name thundered in Rahan's ears.
And he saw Xoar repeating it with bitterness, just before passing away.
Zumka! Zumka! He told me.

A scene to which he had paid little attention a moment earlier came back to his memory.
Zumka burying a bloody horn in his hut!

And he understood everything!
It was Zumka who slaughtered Xoar and Yako!
This cheat wanted to remain the sole leader!

He only had one chance to escape the hunters.
The great deer.

And if you do not believe Rahan, search Zumka's hut!
Dig in the ground!

There you will discover the weapon that killed your leaders!
You lie! You Argh!

Page Twelve.

Ra-ha-ha!
He jumped over the barricade of Hunters.
Rahan does not say "until we meet" to you, but farewell!

These men would in fact never see the son of Crao again, who was already disappearing far away.
Let us dig in the floor of your hut, Zumka!
Uh, Uh No, no, I.

The situation of the deceiver was eloquent.
They had no doubt that he would not escape punishment!

As soon as he felt safe, Rahan abandoned his mount.
If your horns are not “Magic”, they were still very useful to Rahan!
Go “Great-wood.”
Go and join your herd! It needs you!

If the son of Crao was not surprised that his brief stay among the "Heads of Horn" was so turbulent, it is because it was often like this, in those fierce times.
