Hacksaw Ridge (2016) is a biographical war film directed by Mel Gibson and written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, based on the 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector. The film focuses on the World War II experiences of Desmond Doss, an American pacifist combat medic who, as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, refused to carry or use a weapon or firearm of any kind. Doss became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, for service above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Okinawa. In 1952 Stanley Kramer produced an American Western film from a screenplay by Carl Foreman, directed by Fred Zinnemann, and starring Gary Cooper. Now, 70 years later, we are going to revisit this classic. Though mired in controversy at the time of its release due to its political themes, the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four (Actor, Editing, Score and Song) as well as four Golden Globe Awards (Actor, Supporting Actress, Score, and Black and White Cinematography). The award-winning score was written by Russian-born composer Dimitri Tiomkin. High Noon was selected by the Library of Congress as one of the first 25 films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 1989, the NFR's first year of existence. Following the unexpected financial success and the cultural phenomenon of Star Wars (1977), a sequel was swiftly put into production. Negotiations began with Fox in mid-1977 . The studio had already given Lucas controlling interest in the series' merchandising and sequels because it had thought Star Wars would be worthless. The contract was signed on September 21, 1977 and filming had to begin by January 1979. Lucas began formulating ideas in August 1977, but the first draft wasn't completed until February 1978. Subsequent drafts ensued with the fourth on October 24. Meanwhile, Lucas (and the studio) were concerned about keeping the hype and (at least for Lucas) the marketing alive. So while all the pre-production work on Empire Strikes Back was happening, the idea for a holiday variety show on a shoestring budget was pitched and ... somehow ... it happened. On November 17, 1978, Star Wars Fans saw its first glimpse of a post Star Wars (sort of) sequel, and, as it would turn out the first "Expanded Universe" entry. The special is notorious for its extremely negative reception and has never been rebroadcast nor officially released on home video. But once a year, I bring it out to share with you! On September 23, 2022, tropical storm Ian formed southeast of Jamaica, rapidly intensifying into a high-end Category 3 hurricane. It became a high end Category 4 hurricane early on September 28, 2022, while progressing towards the west coast of Florida, and made landfall just below peak intensity in southwest Florida on Cayo Costa Island. Meanwhile, on the mainland of Florida, one fearless YouTuber prepared to do battle with the elements to protect the people of his community. Aged Boomer, in his secret identity as a mild mannered civil servant, left his home and, rather than fleeing to safety, marshaled local civilians into a public shelter and stood watch. After the storm had cleared, it was days before the massive floodwaters withdrew to reveal the chaos they had wrought. It was days more before Boomer could reach his home again and assess the damage. In August 1995, the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette published an article by Charles Savage suggesting that readers watch the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz while listening to the 1973 Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon. Savage said the idea was first shared on an online Pink Floyd newsgroup. According to Savage, if you start the album as the MGM lion roars for the first time onscreen, “The result is astonishing. There is nothing more exciting for a small, upstart YouTube channel than to be able to "colab" with "celebrity" channel, and while Tony of Analog Toys would certainly eschew being referred to a as a celebrity (and likely scoff at the use of the vernacular "colab"), nonetheless, that's how I feel. On April 8, 1990, this pilot episode premiered on ABC. This mystery serial drama television series swept the nation and, to a great extent, the world, with the question, “Who killed Laura Palmer?” There as also a lot of coffee and pie. More than 30 years later, I'm still a huge fan … maybe even more so. And one of the great things about social media like YouTube is meeting other like-minded people. That's where Stephen “deleted_scenes” Otten comes in, and he's a big fan of this series, too. So much so, that we decided to do deep dive series of re-watches and and discussions.
