Anger Will Blind You

A few years ago, in an attempt to mend a friendship, I extended an olive branch. We met for coffee and I showed up with hope, an open heart, and ready to make things better.

However, the conversation took a turn I had not anticipated and I left furious. My anger and frustration took over and it felt like I blacked out. I made it to my car just as the tears started to flow. (Don’t worry, I gave myself time to calm down before driving.)

Looking back, I can see that the frustration was distracting me from my broken heart, my ego was protecting me from the grief of losing someone so important to me, and my anger was blocking me from seeing the situation for what it was - two scared people who had no idea how to lay down their egoic attitudes and show compassion for one another.

No one won that day but anger.

A friendship, years in the making, was dissolved.

Where else does anger blind us to what’s right in front of us? Let’s talk about it on this week’s Moment of Presence…
