Mangaluru, India saw temperatures soar on Sunday, as devotees gathered to casually yeet fire at each other. The annual ‘Agni Keli’ festival honors Durga, the Hindu goddess of war, and involves doing battle with flaming palm fronds, protected from the searing heat by nothing but a dhoti.
It may look chaotic but the battle is extremely well organized, and there are even ‘referees’ on hand to stop foul play, and to treat any injuries with holy water.
