A plot of agricultural land in the Krasnosulinsky district of Rostov Region no longer exists after collapsing into a sinkhole. The sinkhole, discovered in the Gukovo-Gnilushevsky rural settlement, is remarkable because there are no, and have never been any mines in the area.

Mikhail Doroshenkov of the Moscow branch of the A. P. Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute said the sinkhole was likely a karst – a geological formation that occurs when soluble bedrock such as limestone is washed away by underground water flows, often causing a sinkhole when the ground above collapses.

The sinkhole has since been filled in.
