"I'm Your Puppet ," written by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, was the Purify cousins' (James Purify and Robert "Bobby" Lee Dickey) first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 and only top 10 hit rising to no. 6 on the chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). Funny that Bobby Dickey eventually hated the song. Dickey recalled in The Tallahassee Democrat in 2000 "that he despised singing the song. 'I hated it,' he said. 'It was originally intended to be the B-side. But things got changed ... I sang it for 23 hours straight (in the studio), that's why I hate it'" (songfacts, 2024). The Purfiy's recording was nominated for the 1967 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals (awardsandshows, 2024).
