Love Me, Love Me Not: It’s an Attitude
Broken Vows Pt.1
February 3-4 2024

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to
choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” – Viktor
Frankel

My Attitudes Impact…
2 Sam. 6:14-16 (NIV); 20-23 (MSG) Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before
the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with
shouts and the sound of trumpets. As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of
David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping
and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart…David returned home to bless his
family. Michal, Saul’s daughter, came out to greet him: “How wonderfully the king has
distinguished himself today exposing himself to the eyes of the servants’ maids like some
burlesque street dancer!” David replied to Michal, “In God’s presence I’ll dance all I want! He
chose me over your father and the rest of our family and made me prince over God’s people,
over Israel. Oh yes, I’ll dance to God’s glory—more recklessly even than this. And as far as I’m
concerned. I’ll gladly look like a fool but among these maids you’re so worried about, I’ll be
honored no end.”   Michal, Saul’s daughter, was barren the rest of her life.

A New Attitude…
Rom. 12:2 (NLT) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you
into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for
you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Phil 2:5 (NIV/NLT) In your relationships with one another…You must have the same attitude
that Christ Jesus had.
1. I Will Surrender My Rights!
Phil 2:6 (NIV) Who, being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to
be used to his own advantage;
Eph. 5:21 (NIV) Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

2. I Will be a Servant.
Phil. 2:7 (NIV) rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being
made in human likeness.
1 Cor. 7:3-4 (MSG) The marriage bed must be a place of mutuality—the husband seeking to
satisfy his wife, the wife seeking to satisfy her husband. Marriage is not a place to “stand up for
your rights.” Marriage is a decision to serve the other, whether in bed or out.

3. I Will Make Any Sacrifice Necessary.
Phil 2:8 (NIV) And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming
obedient to death—even death on a cross!
Eph. 5:25 (MSG) Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the
church—a love marked by giving, not getting.
Phil 2:4 (MSG) Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting
your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

Don’t Trip Over…
1. Weariness
Heb. 12:1-2; 12-14a (NLT) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of
witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin
that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.    We do
this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of
the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the
place of honor beside God’s throne… So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen
your weak knees.    Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame
will not fall but become strong.   Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy
life…
2. Whispers
Eph. 4:26b-27 (MSG) Don’t go to bed angry. Don’t give the Devil that kind of foothold in your
life.

3. Wrong Expectations
John 16:33 (NLT) I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you
will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

It is the will to keep going that separates winners from losers. – Admiral James Stockdale
A Winning Attitude…
The Stockdale Paradox is a technique to navigate challenging and ambiguous times by
combining the ability to confront the brutal facts of your current reality, even as you maintain
unwavering faith that you will prevail in the end, no matter how distant that is.
Good To Great by Jim Collins
Phil 2:9-11 (NLT) Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the
name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and
on earth and under the earth,   and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of
God the Father.
Heb. 12:2b (NLT) …Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its
shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
