Love Me, Love Me Not: It’s an Attitude
Broken Vows Pt.1
February 3-4 2024
@troygramling
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to
choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” – Viktor
Frankel
My Attitudes Impact…
2 Sam. 6:14-16 (NIV); 20-23 (MSG) Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before
theLordwith all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of theLord with
shoutsand the sound of trumpets. As the ark of theLord was entering the City of
David,Michaldaughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping
and dancing before theLord, she despised him in her heart…David returned home to bless his
family. Michal, Saul’s daughter, came out to greet him: “How wonderfully the king has
distinguished himself today exposing himself to the eyes of the servants’ maids like some
burlesque street dancer!” David replied to Michal, “InGod’s presence I’ll dance all I want! He
chose me over your father and the rest of our family and made me prince overGod’s people,
over Israel. Oh yes, I’ll dance toGod’s glory—more recklessly even than this. And as far as I’m
concerned. I’ll gladly look like a fool but among these maids you’re so worried about, I’ll be
honored no end.” Michal, Saul’s daughter, was barren the rest of her life.
A New Attitude…
Rom. 12:2 (NLT) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you
into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for
you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Phil 2:5 (NIV/NLT) In your relationships with one another…You must have the same attitude
that Christ Jesus had.
1. I Will Surrender My Rights!
Phil 2:6 (NIV) Who, being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to
be used to his own advantage;
Eph. 5:21 (NIV) Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
2. I Will be a Servant.
Phil. 2:7 (NIV) rather, he made himself nothingby taking the very nature of a servant, being
made in human likeness.
1 Cor. 7:3-4 (MSG) The marriage bed must be a place of mutuality—the husband seeking to
satisfy his wife, the wife seeking to satisfy her husband. Marriage is not a place to “stand up for
your rights.” Marriage is a decision to serve the other, whether in bed or out.
3. I Will Make Any Sacrifice Necessary.
Phil 2:8 (NIV) And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himselfby becoming
obedient to death—even death on a cross!
Eph. 5:25 (MSG) Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the
church—a love marked by giving, not getting.
Phil 2:4 (MSG) Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting
your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.
Don’t Trip Over…
1. Weariness
Heb. 12:1-2; 12-14a (NLT) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of
witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin
that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do
this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of
the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the
place of honor beside God’s throne… So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen
your weak knees. Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame
will not fall but become strong. Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy
life…
2. Whispers
Eph. 4:26b-27 (MSG) Don’t go to bed angry. Don’t give the Devil that kind of foothold in your
life.
3. Wrong Expectations
John 16:33 (NLT) I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you
will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
It is the will to keep going that separates winners from losers. – Admiral James Stockdale
A Winning Attitude…
The Stockdale Paradox is a technique to navigate challenging and ambiguous times by
combining the ability to confront the brutal facts of your current reality, even as you maintain
unwavering faith that you will prevail in the end, no matter how distant that is.
Good To Great by Jim Collins
Phil 2:9-11 (NLT) Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the
name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,in heaven and
on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of
God the Father.
Heb. 12:2b (NLT) …Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its
shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

The Lion of Judah represents strength and courage. We can walk into our circumstances with confidence that God is with us. The Lion of Judah represents victory, and Jesus was victorious when he conquered death and rose again on the third day. This Easter, 2023, Pastor Troy shares the many characteristics of God, and like a lion, He never backs away from us. Even though we may run and hide from God when we feel like we fall short, God never does. Like the boldness of a lion, God does not retreat from us. He continually pursues us. The Lion of Judah rules forever and wants us to join His eternal family.

TEACHING NOTES:
THE ANTIDOTE OF GOOD FRIDAY…
Why Not Look?
1. Frustrated with the Circumstances…Impatient in the Wilderness.
Numbers 21:4b-5a (NLT) “…But the people grew impatient with the long journey, and they
began to speak against God and Moses.”
Numbers 14:32-38 (NLT) But as for you, you will drop dead in this wilderness. And your children
will be like shepherds, wandering in the wilderness for forty years. In this way, they will pay for
your faithlessness, until the last of you lies dead in the wilderness. Because your men explored
the land for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years—a year for each day,
suffering the consequences of your sins. Then you will discover what it is like to have me for an
enemy.’ I, the Lord, have spoken! I will certainly do these things to every member of the
community who has conspired against me. They will be destroyed here in this wilderness, and
here they will die!” The ten men Moses had sent to explore the land—the ones who incited
rebellion against the Lord with their bad report— were struck dead with a plague before
the Lord. Of the twelve who had explored the land, only Joshua and Caleb remained alive.
2. Frustrated by the Uncertainty of the Wilderness.
Hebrews 12:1b-2 (NLT) …And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do
this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of
the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the
place of honor beside God’s throne.
3. Frustrated by God’s Provision in the Wilderness.
Psalm 23:1-4 (NLT) The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need…Even when I walk through
the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.
4. Frustrated with God’s Answer in the Wilderness.
1 Cor. 15:54-55; 57 (NLT) Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that
will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where
is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”… But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and
death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
5. An Unwillingness to Confront and Confess Our Sin.
2 Cor. 5:21 (NLT) For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that
we could be made right with God through Christ.
Matthew 27:46 (NLT) At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli lema
sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
1 Cor. 1:18 (NLT) The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction!
But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.

The Wisdom of Serpents
4. Look for Opportunities to enter the Conversation.
1 Cor. 9:22-23 (MSG) …I didn’t take on their way of life. I kept my bearings in Christ—but I entered their world and tried to experience things from their point of view. I’ve become just about every sort of servant there is in my attempts to lead those I meet into a God-saved life. I did all this because of the Message. I didn’t just want to talk about it; I wanted to be in on it!
1 Chron. 12:32 (NLT) From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders of the tribe with their relatives. All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take.
5. Have the Courage to Pursue every Challenge no matter its Size.
1 Sam. 17:45-46a; 49 (NLT) David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head…Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.
Phil. 4:13 (NLT) For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
The Innocence of Doves
6. Position Yourself for Favor/ Blessing.
Lev. 5:7 (NLT) “But if you cannot afford to bring a sheep, you may bring to the Lord two turtledoves or two young pigeons as the penalty for your sin. One of the birds will be for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering.
Luke 3:21-22 (NLT) One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.
The Boldness of a Lion
7. Pursue Your Destiny with Confidence.
Proverbs 28:1 (NLT) The wicked run away when no one is chasing them, but the godly are as bold as lions.
“The Innocence of a Dove positions the Believer to be as Bold as a Lion.”
Proverbs 30:30 (NASB) The lion, which is mighty among animals And does not retreat from anything,
Isa. 31:4a (NLT) But this is what the Lord has told me: “When a strong young lion stands growling over a sheep it has killed, it is not frightened by the shouts and noise of a whole crowd of shepherds.
Gal. 6:9 (NLT) So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
1 John 4:4 (NLT) But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Is image everything to you? Do you seek the approval of others to determine your worth and
value? If you do, it's a hefty price to pay to live out your potential. In Part 4 of the series,
Potential Possibilities, Pastor Troy Gramling gives us ways to defeat living under the fear of
other's opinions. The only applause we should be seeking is God. His is the only opinion that
counts!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
TEACHING NOTES:
The Cost of “Fear of People’s Opinions”
You Trade Big Dreams for Little Dreams.
You Trade Authenticity for Approval.
You Trade Happiness for Anxiety.
You Trade Your Purpose for other people’s Satisfaction.
Defeating FOPO to Live Your Potential…
Matthew 7:1-5 (NLT) “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye?5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
Refuse to Judge Others Selfishly.
John 7:24 (NASB) Do not judge by the outward appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
Matthew 7:12 (NLT) “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.
Don’t Surrender Your Value to Others.
Matthew 7:6 (NASB) “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
Matthew 7:13-14 (NLT) “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.
Find Your Identity in Christ and Encouragement in Community.
Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT) “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
Matthew 7:20 (NLT) Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.
Proverbs 11:14 (NASB) Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in an abundance of counselors there is victory.
Trust God with Your Destiny.
Matthew 7:7-11 (NLT) “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
Eph. 2:8-10 (NLT) God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Psalm 23:1 (NLT) The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need
