RWANDA: LAND OF HIGH JUMP

31

The high jump is a sport dear to Rwandans. It used to be an integral part of the culture, eagerly watched by Rwandan royals - with participants pulling off feats fit for modern-day Olympics. Unfortunately, the sport declined with the monarchy in Rwanda - but government-backed efforts are now underway to make it a thing of national pride again. Bring on the medals!

  • it seems entirely plausible that these rawandan competitions influenced the development of the olympic high jump event. from the photos, it looks like the rawandans used techniques that were more similar to the old "straddle style" technique used in high jumps in the past. there is no way that they could have been using the "fosbury flop" technique commonly used today (so named because it was introduced by dick fosbury at the 1968 summer olympics). it looks like the rawandan jumpers used a technique that allowed them to land on their feet. using the "fosbury flop" technique, you land on your back.
