Gloria (Them, 1965; Shadows of Knight, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-03-21. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Gloria," written by Van Morrison, was Them's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart stalling at no. 93 and remaining on the chart for only one week in May of 1965; however, the Shadows of Knight recorded the song the following year and had a top 20 hit with the song, which rose to the no. 10 position on the Billboard chart in 1966. Becuase of the success of the Shadows' version, Them rereleased their original version a month later, though their version still was only able to move up to no. 71 on the chart (Whitburn, 2013). According to Morrison, "the song was titled after his cousin Gloria, who was 13 years older. The song is not about her though" (songfacts, 2024). In 1999, "Gloria" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (Whituburn, 2013), and it is listed on the "Rolling Stone's" 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at #211 (rollingstone, 2003).

Lyrics:

Like to tell you 'bout my baby
You know she comes round
Just 'bout five feet four
From her head to the ground
Well she comes around here
Just about midnight
She makes me feel so good Lord
Makes me feel alright.

Her name is G-L-O-R-I-A
Gloria, Gloria, Gloria...

Yeah, she comes around here
Just about midnight
Makes me feel so good Lord
Makes me feel alright
Walkin' down my street
Comes up to my house
She knocks upon me door
Makes me feel alright.

Her name is G-L-O-R-I-A
Gloria, Gloria, Gloria...
