Much earlier but in the vein of Orwell's "1984" (1940s) and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" (1930s), a short story written in 1920 from the book "If the War Goes On... Reflections on War and Politics" by Hermann Hesse. Clearly, this was not against the Soviet State or the Nazi regime but against the new nascent, panoptic, overreaching, omnipresent Western Bureaucracy. (The word 'bureaucracy' deriving, of course, from bureau - French for office, department). In any case, the loss of individual freedom vis-à-vis the all powerful State. (Or Corporations).
