Armed gangs attack neighborhoods in Haiti’s capital

Two upscale neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince, Haiti were the targets of lethal gang violence on Monday. At least a dozen people were killed during the attacks in the capital, which saw gunmen raid and loot homes in the communities of Laboule and Thomassin. Bodies were left strewn on the ground, as grieving relatives and traumatized locals attempted to process events.

The two neighborhoods have, until now, largely escaped the surge of gang violence that has swept the country in recent weeks. Haiti has been plunged into an increasingly violent crisis since a coordinated attack on key government targets in Port-au-Prince and the raid of Haiti’s two biggest prisons, which released 4,000 inmates. Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned soon after, and the country is now under gang control.
