2009 Supreme Court ruling unanimously beneficiary designations are more powerful than wills!

In 2009, the Supreme Court heard the daughter of a man who wanted to leave everything to her argue that his will should be done as stated in his will.

The Supreme Court ruled that the named beneficiary designation named his late ex-wife and $5 million would go to her, even though the ex-wife gave up her claim to the money!

There are a few times to look at your life insurance policies to make sure the designated beneficiary is still who you want it to be for instance, when you get married or divorced and if you have someone designated, that’s at the age where they might pass before you will. Hope that helps you and your family a ton of financial pain after a death.
