Port Tampa Cemetery, Tampa. This is Cal O'Ween !
Today we are headed to Tampa to the MacDill Airforce Base. This Military base established in 1941 is also the location of one of Tampa's historic, forgotten African American Cemeteries. Established in the mid 1800's, this Cemetery's oldest, marked grave dates back to 1840 and the most recent burial dates back to 1930. An Archeological dig and ground penetrating radar made the shocking discovery that there are around 121 burials detected here, of which only 26 were marked and documented. Of the 26 marked, most were infants, children and young adults. MacDill Airforce Base did honor those buried in the lost cemetery in a beautiful memorial service in February 2022. Today the cemetery and it's bodies lay resting beneath the trees of the Airforce Base and a single Cenotaph is placed in front of it to memorialize the departed.
