"Love Is in the Air," written by Harry Vanda and George Young, was John Paul Young's only top 40 hit in the US rising to the no. 7 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978 (Whitburn, 2013), and it landed at no. 3 on the Australian chart, no. 5 on the UK Singles Chart (fandom, 2024) and no. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart (National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, 2017). Additionally, in 2017, the song was selected for preservation in the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia collection (nfsa, 2017). "In 1992 it became the theme song to Baz Luhrmann's debut feature 'Strictly Ballroom;' the ‘Ballroom Mix’ climbed the Australian charts and helped make ‘Love is in the Air’ the 'Most played Australian song overseas'" (nfsa, 2017).
