"Beautiful People," written by Kenny O'Dell, was O'Dell's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart landing at the no. 38 position in 1967; at the same time, Bobby Vee's version of the song rose to the no. 37 position on the chart the same year (Whitburn, 2013). Although "Beautiful People" was not a huge pop hit for O'Dell nor Vee, still both broke the top 40, it was a springboard for his future writings. O'Dell wrote or cowrote a number of country hits/top 40 hits, for example: "Behind Closed Doors" for Charlie Rich, which earned O'Dell a Grammy for Best Country Song and a CMA for Song of the Year (wideopencountry, 2018); "Next Plane to London" for The Rose Garden; and "Mama He's Crazy" for the Judds (secondhandsongs, 2024). O'Dell's given name was Kenneth Gist (rateyourmusic, 2024); he passed away of natural causes on March 27, 2018 (W. Hermanson, tasteofcountry, Mar 29, 2018).
