Lupercalia, was held annually on February in worship of Lupercus a Roman god associated with shepherds and fertility, often identified with Faunus or Pan, and featured animal sacrifices, random coupling (FORNICATION/PROSTITUTION/ADULTERY), and the whipping of women (VIOLENCE/GENDER BASED VIOLENCE) with thongs made from the skins of the sacrificed animals. Women willingly sought these strikes as a form of divine blessing for fertility. The festival was purely dedicated to fertility and purification.

The rituals of Lupercalia, an ancient Roman festival, included:

The dog sacrifice in Lupercalia was significant because it was considered a powerful means of purifying and protecting against evil forces. Dogs were widely respected as sacred animals in ancient Italy and Greece, possessing special abilities to ward off evil and enhance fertility

This festival was eventually suppressed to exert power and Roman Catholic (religious) dominion by Pope Gelasius on the people in the 5th century, and February 14 was designated as a feast day to honor Saint Valentine, whose martyrdom occurred sometime around that date in the 3rd century CE.

In summary, Valentine's Day has alot of superficial similarities with certain aspects of ancient pagan religions, shrouded with romantic connotations due to cultural influences. The day promotes fornication, adultery, the love for superficial things all in the name of love.
