On Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00 PM EST IHN held a 1-hour webinar where Linda Bazinet took us on a journey through the fascinating world of melatonin. Best known for its effects on sleep, melatonin is involved in much more. Described by Descartes as the “seat of the soul”, the pineal gland produces melatonin in response to nerve impulses from the optic tract via the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). This small hormone is mighty – not only is it key in circadian rhythm, it also affects mood, fertility and immunity; in addition melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that can cross the blood-brain barrier and has neuroprotective effects.
