In this episode we're Installing the Metal Roofing of the Firewood Shed and Campsite Cleanup. It's time to get rid of the logs we've had just piled up and in the way. We're hoping that now we can have some dry firewood for our campfires and lunches. We install our screws on the ribs of the metal. We feel this is better as wate has no place to sit when the screws are on top of the rib. Of course we have to be careful to not crush the rib by tightening the screw too much but water, snow and ice should run down the rib. We use the Milwaukee M18 Fuel Hatchet on a Maple Tree without any issue. The center of the tree is a bit rotten but still, this thing is amazing. Until the next one, keep Living the Northern Life! Today we are using the tractor with a new thumb for the forks. This sure helped speed up the process that would have taken me a few weekends to clean up. It doesn't really look much different but it sure is easy to move around and I'm not tripping over anything for a change. We are getting a lot closer to being able to plant the red pine trees. It's time to start felling some of the bigger trees now that we have most of the easy stuff done. Soon it will be time to bring my stepfathers tractor over and move the branches out of the way and take the logs to the saw mill and cut the smaller logs into fire wood. I was finally able to cut a swath across the front of the property. I piled up the branches off the trail and cleaned up the main site. We are going to get all the branches and trees off of this section and make some real progress but this has all been done without heavy machinery. We are hoping to get the tractor in to move all the branches but my stepfather is working on building a hydraulic thumb so that he can pick them up and not lose anything on the forks. I have to clean out the grass and small saplings to be able to get in under the trees to cut down the bottom branches and drop the trees safely. Today I'm using my Stihl 4-Tooth grass blade and it works pretty well. I have purchased a "Laser Blade Brushcutter Clearcut 7 inch" and when it arrives I will do a review on it. Cutting the logs up to be the bases and supports for a new lumber drying building. You saw us lay out a chalk line and then square it up. We used an old method we rattle off called "3, 4, 5" but this time he went 6 (3x2), 8 (4x2), 10 (5x2). This is how you find the length of the long side of a triangle using the old school method and it works just as well today as it did back then. We might grab a calculator and try and figure it out today but this way is faster to create a square corner if you already know the method. Clearing more BUGS for sure! I'm not sure who's winning... me or the deer flies MAN they are vicious!!! I think that this section of bush will be the most difficult to clear because there is no path through yet and everything is getting congested. We need to start getting rid of the branches so that I can drop more trees and create a clearing instead of filling it up. Have you ever brought something in to be repaired and when you pick it up you're told that, "it's running great!" and you just trust them and pay the bill only to find out when you get home that it runs worse than when you brought it in? After I replaced the fuel line on my Stihl MS290 I knew that the only real way to test it was to put it to work. This is that moment! I have to say that it works better than it did even before it had an issue! The old gas line seem to be a literal plug and pray and that it had no grommet to hold the fuel line in! We are clearing a large chunk of land so that the red pines can be in full sun so they can grow.
