"Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head," written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, was B. J. Thomas' first no. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart landing on top in 1969-1970 (Whitburn, 2013). The song, which was penned for the film "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid," won two oscars for Bacharach and David in 1970: Music (original score - for a motion picture) and Music (Song - Original for the picture) (oscars, 2024). B. J. Thomas was not the first choice for the writers, Bacharach said that he originally wanted Ray Stevens to sing it, but Stevens turned him down due to a prior recording engagement with Kris Kristofferson (D. Liebenson, vanityfair, Sep. 25, 2019). Thomas, who was struggling with laryngitis was hesitant, but agreed to record the song. After hearing the recording, with his slightly raspy voice, he said that “there’s maybe only two or three times in my career when I felt like I’d recorded a hit record, no doubt, and that was one of them” (L. Hutchinson, performingsongwriter, May 12, 2013). According to Thomas, the song is "about freedom. . . Here, we have these outlaws [Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid] that have finally found a little respite there out in the woods. They have a place to kind of relax. It’s kind of an American song. The rain falls on everybody, but as long as you are free, everything is okay" (bjthomas, Mar. 5, 2021).
