"Fly Me To The Moon," written by Bart Howard, was first recorded by Kaye Ballard in 1954 but with the title "In Other Words" and as a waltz 3/4 timing. In 1960, Peggy Lee recorded the song, and her performance on the Ed Sullivan Show made it quite popular. Meanwhile, people began calling the song "Fly Me To the Moon." In 1962, Joe Harnell and his orchestra scored an instrumental bossa nova hit with "Fly Me To the Moon," which rose to no. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (Whitburn, 2013), and won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance (songfacts, 2024). Later in 1963, Peggy Lee convinced Howard to officially change the name from "In Other Words" to "Fly Me To The Moon," which he did. However, it was in 1964 when the song became a classic with Frank Sinatra's version. He changed it to a 4/4 swing beat. Although his version never made it onto the Billboard chart, his version has been associated with the song and was unofficially connected to NASA's Apollo moon space program and was played in space on both Apollo 10 and Apollo 11 (see songfacts, 2024). In fact, when "the Apollo 11 lunar lander touched down at Tranquility Base on 20 July 1969 – when [Neil] Armstrong uttered the famous words 'the Eagle has landed' . . . Buzz Aldrin . . . reached back and grabbed a cassette of 'Fly Me to the Moon'" and played it. Hence, "Sinatra’s song was the first music ever heard [played] on the moon" (M. Chilton, independent, Jul. 18, 2019).
