February 17, 1864 H.L. Hunley became the first successful attack submarine in world history when it sank the USS Housatonic. Shortly after the successful mission of H.L. Hanley disappeared and remained lost at sea until it was discovered in 1995. Hunley will be raised in the summer of 2000. During her short career, the Confederacy lost 21 crew members in three different sinkings of the Hunley.
