Dynamic steam effect on a moving coffee cup - DaVinci Resolve Fusion

Today we will take a look at one way we can add dynamic steam to a coffee cup that is moving in our scene. We will be using a 3D object track done in Syntheyes to help us get the movement of the cup (Originally I was going to do this in 3D but you could get a similar effect using a 2D tracking solution, explained below). We will then import our camera from Syntheyes into Fusion and set everything up to work with the rest of Resolve. Next we will setup our own emitter for the steam effect by placing a sphere object next to the top of the cup and add it to the object track so it follows along. By adding a noise texture to the 3D object we can use the alpha from the render to drive the efficient 2D particle system inside the emitter using the bitmap mode. By changing a few settings and adding some turbulence we can make a pretty convincing dynamic steam effect that we can add to the moving coffee cup.

Although we use Syntheyes for the tracking, this same effect could also be done entirely inside of Fusion using the 3D camera tracker set to animated object. Or even 2D tracking solutions like the Tracker, planar tracker or even the surface tracker. Once you have the track, connect it to a fast noise with a polygon for the shape and voila! Pretty much the same effect.

As always if you have any problems or issues fell free to reach out in the comments and I will do my best to reply as soon as I can.

**Just FYI the object track for this project is not perfect but it is good enough for this effect**
