How to use VDB Files with uVolume in Resolve Fusion 19
With the release of DaVinci Resolve Fusion 19 beta, we see some welcome new upgrades and new tools. One of the one's that caught my eye is the new uVolume tool. The uVolume tool allows you to import and manipulate VDB files directly in Fusion. I downloaded the new beta version a couple of days ago and thought I would put out a short video on some of the ways you can use and change the settings on this new addition to the USD tools.
As always if you have any problems or issues fell free to reach out in the comments and I will do my best to reply as soon as I can.

DaVinci Resolve Fusion 3D Camera Export Workflows and Common Problems
Today we look at some ways we can export our camera from the Camera Tracker in DaVinci Resolve Fusion. We will export the camera, a point cloud, geometry and undistorted plates out to other 3D software, set things up, so they will match correctly when we return back to Resolve Fusion. We will be going over 2 different workflows in Fusion and discussing some of the most common issues. The overscan workflow and the full resolution undistorted plate workflow. We will use Blender as the 3D software example in this video, but the kinds of problems you run into are the same across all 3D software.
First we start with the default workflow in Fusion for 3D Tracking which is the overscan method. In this method we track our original clip and have the camera tracker figure out the lens distortion values. Since the exported camera is based on the original resolution we will use the overscan capabilities in the renderer to help make sure there are enough pixels added so our elements don't get cut off in the final composite. Then we will export our camera, scene and undistorted plate so that we can set things up in our 3d software to match the setup in Resolve Fusion. When we import our camera into Blender we will go over a lot of the most common issues people have with getting proper alignment. These issues are common in any 3d software when things don't line up correctly. Once we have our scene set up properly we will add some geometry using our point cloud and export out the objects and a render so we can make sure everything is matching in Fusion. Once we are back in Fusion we will import our elements and look at the settings we need to set up in Fusion to make everything work properly for our composite.
Next we will look at a second workflow, in which we will do the distortion before we do the tracking so that our camera export is set to the size of the full undistorted plates resolution. We will quickly go through the same operations we did in the previous method while pointing out the differences in the workflow.
In this video we tackle most of the most common issues you will run into when round tripping from DaVinci Fusion to other 3D software.

Dynamic steam effect on a moving coffee cup - DaVinci Resolve Fusion
Today we will take a look at one way we can add dynamic steam to a coffee cup that is moving in our scene. We will be using a 3D object track done in Syntheyes to help us get the movement of the cup (Originally I was going to do this in 3D but you could get a similar effect using a 2D tracking solution, explained below). We will then import our camera from Syntheyes into Fusion and set everything up to work with the rest of Resolve. Next we will setup our own emitter for the steam effect by placing a sphere object next to the top of the cup and add it to the object track so it follows along. By adding a noise texture to the 3D object we can use the alpha from the render to drive the efficient 2D particle system inside the emitter using the bitmap mode. By changing a few settings and adding some turbulence we can make a pretty convincing dynamic steam effect that we can add to the moving coffee cup.
Although we use Syntheyes for the tracking, this same effect could also be done entirely inside of Fusion using the 3D camera tracker set to animated object. Or even 2D tracking solutions like the Tracker, planar tracker or even the surface tracker. Once you have the track, connect it to a fast noise with a polygon for the shape and voila! Pretty much the same effect.

Single Tracker to 3D Object Track in Syntheyes
In this quick tip video we look at one way to use one tracker to create a 3D object track in Syntheyes. Inspired from an old video on the Syntheyes youtube channel. We first track our scene and set up a coordinate system. Then we track our car with a supervised track to get accurate 2d motion. Next we add a plane for our ground, this will be used to project our 2d tracker onto to create the 3D object path. After that we run the project tracker to object track script to produce our Object track. Last we will put in some simple geometry to check our path. This is an old technique that has a lot of different uses when trying to solve different 3d tracking issues. Especially useful for producing 3D object tracks when there are not enough points for a regular object track. Might have had a little too many cups of coffee for this one.

Snap Center Point to Center of Mask Shape in DaVinci Resolve Fusion
In this quick tip video we take a look at one way we can change the center point to snap to the center of a mask (polygon) in DaVinci Resolve Fusion. First we look at how we can take any mask and snap it to the center point of the screen based on the center of the shape. Next we look at a way to do the opposite, where we will snap the center point to the middle of the mask shape. Last we will make a small Macro so we can reuse the tools in other compositions without the need to add all of the nodes again. This is not a fully flushed out idea but more of a direction. If you have any ideas on this subject or know of a way to do this let us know!

How to create "The Ninth Gate" titles with DaVinci Resolve Fusion: A step-by-step guide
In Part 1 of this beginner/intermediate tutorial in DaVinci Resolve Fusion, we will look at one approach to making titles similar to the movie "The Ninth Gate". The opening title sequence has a camera moving through a landscape and passing through doorways. We will use 2 still images, one for the ground and one for the building and doors. We will then use these to texture 3d cards/planes in DaVinci Fusion. Setting up a 3d scene in Fusion we will use the cards/planes to replicate the space for the camera move. After setting up the animation for the camera, we will add the titles and animate them to fly by the camera as the camera dollies towards the door. We will animate one text first then copy and paste the same settings to get a uniform move. Next we will go into the keyframe editor in Fusion to offset the animations of the text. Once we are happy with our animations we will add in lights to give the scene a creepier feel. Through out the tutorial we will run into issues and work out different solutions to fix the problems as we go. By the end we will have a decent setup for part 2, where we will get into animating the doors opening as the camera approaches at the end. We will also add some light rays(god rays) to the opening door for a more cinematic look.
I took a different approach to this tutorial and decided to do it a little less refined so that people might understand some of the issues and solutions you may run into when doing your own projects. This means it's not already planned out so expect a little bit of jumping around in the composition. 😀

Screen Replacement in DaVinci Resolve Fusion: Beginner/Intermediate
A very common effect in DaVinci Resolve is replacing a screen. In this video we will look into some different methods to get good results. We start by using the planar tracker to track the phone in DaVinci Resolve Fusion. Then using the track we will attach our screen replacement to replace the green screen. Next we will look at how to build a custom screen replacement for our phone. That can be used for interactions with our new screen. After that we look at animating the screen to match the movement of the fingers when they interact with the phone. When our screen and animation are all done we look into keying the green screen of the phone and some techniques on retaining the natural refections and refining the edges. As one key will not be good enough for realistic results we add another key just for the finger and merge the 2 keys together to get an accurate matte. Finally we add a few finishing touches to help really sell the screen replacement.

How to erase anything in DaVinci Resolve Fusion - a tutorial (PART 1)
In this video we look at one way to erase a person from a video and have them reappear, using DaVinci Fusion. This tutorial is by request, based on an After Effects video tutorial by C.M. de la VEGA, on how to do the effect in DaVinci Resolve Fusion. This will be part 1 of 2. In part one we use the planar tracker in Fusion to track and stabilize the image so we can use it to paint clean plates removing the person. Because of the lens distortion in the clip we need to use a distort/undistort workflow to get decent results. We will look at solving several problems that we will run across through out the shot. With tips and solution for each of the problems. In part 2 we will look in to adding particles and energy effects completely built inside Fusion to make the effect more exciting and do any finishing touches to make it look great!
I did want to mention this tutorial deals with an unusual situation having to use quartic lens distortion values just to do the planar track. For a more simple approach you can just skip ahead
to about 5 minutes where we discuss the planar tracking. And then disregard anything to do with the distortion.

Quick Tip - Using the Magic Mask with the Planar Tracker in DaVinci Resolve Fusion
In this quick tip tutorial we will take a look at a way we can use the Magic Mask in DaVinci Fusion to occlude objects we don't want to track with the Planar Tracker. We will use the Bitmap node to turn our alpha, from the magic mask, into a mask that the planar tracker will recognize. Doing so can help with the accuracy of the track. Lastly we will finish off the shot by putting text behind the biker as he moves through the shot.

"Writer's Block" Behind the scenes - DaVinci Resolve Fusion
In this video we take a look at what went into making the short "Writer's Block". This video is a little different from most of our videos as it is more of a lecture. We will go through the entire process from the storyboard to the final video. We used DaVinci Resolve and Fusion for editing and the compositing. And used Houdini, 3D Coat, PF Track and Metashape to help with the 3D assets. As always if you have any questions feel free to reach out in the comments.

Writer's Block - Uncovering the Secret Cure to Writer's Block
Short video on how to cure writer's block. This was originally a test shoot we were doing that we decided to have some fun with and throw together a quick video.
It was fun to test out ideas and figure out solutions to a lot of the common issues you can run into trying to get your ideas out to video. I'll be putting up a behind the scenes video soon to go over how it was done and all the many issues we ran into.

Logo (Object) Removal in DaVinci Resolve Fusion
In this tutorial we will go over one way of removing a logo from a laptop in DaVinci Resolve Fusion 18. Although this shot isn't too difficult there are a few issues we will need to deal with to get a decent result. We will use the planar tracker to stabilize the logo and then paint it out. Then reintroduce the animation so it matches the original clip. Last we will look at using the blur and the OFX Jpeg Damage node to help match the pattern and quality of the original image. The method in this video is a common approach to Object Removal in DaVinci Fusion.

Tracking Masks for Compositing in DaVinci Resolve Fusion 18
In this video we take a look at several different approaches to adding the tracker animation to our masks (polygons) in DaVinci Resolve Fusion 18. We will start with a simple track to add translation to our mask. Then look at a couple different approaches as well as discuss some of the issues with reference time in Blackmagic Fusion. After that we will add a second tracker and learn how to add not just translation but rotation and scale to our masks as well. Finally we will take a look at the Tracker Plus plugin from Reactor and how it can help simplify a range of issues.
