Thimerosal is an organic compound that consists of ethylmercury and thiosalicylate. The ethylmercury component is responsible for its antimicrobial properties, while the thiosalicylate component helps to stabilize the compound. Thimerosal is used as a preservative in vaccines and other medical products to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. It has been used in vaccines to prevent contamination and maintain sterility in multi-dose vials. However, Thimerosal has been largely phased out of vaccines in many countries due to concerns about its mercury content and potential adverse effects. Some flu vaccines and some vaccines outside the United States still include Thimerosal.
