Jennifer Juniper (Donovan, 1968). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-01-26. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Jennifer Juniper," written by Donovan Leitch, was Donovan's 7th top 40 hit ascending to #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968 (Whitburn, 2013). According to songfacts.com (2021), "Jennifer Juniper" was in reference to George Harrison's sister-in-law, at the time, Jennifer Boyd, and her boutique, which she managed; Jennifer Boyd eventually married Mick Fleetwood. Jennifer, in an interview with Paul Zollo (americansongwriter, 2020), stated that Donovan wrote the song in an effort to court her; his endeavor did not materialize . . . though she and he stayed good friends (songfacts, 2023). From the album "The Hurdy Gurdy Man," Donovan sang the last verse in "French;" however, during an interview with songfacts, Donovan said "after I tried it, I asked my French pals what they thought of my French verse. They said, 'What French verse?' My accent wasn't right. So, it was a trial. I don't sing in other languages" (G. Prato, songfacts, Aug. 10, 2016). I didn't not attempt it with my version since I don't speak French.

Lyrics:

Jennifer Juniper, lives upon the hill
Jennifer Juniper, sitting very still

Is she sleeping? I don't think so
Is she breathing? Yes, very low
Whatcha doing, Jennifer, my love?

Jennifer Juniper, rides a dappled mare
Jennifer Juniper, lilacs in her hair

Is she dreaming? Yes, I think so
Is she pretty? Yes, ever so
Whatcha doing, Jennifer, my love?

I'm thinking of what it would be like if she loved me
You know just lately this happy song, it came along
And I like to somehow try and tell you

Jennifer Juniper, hair of golden flax
Jennifer Juniper, longs for what she lacks

Do you like her? Yes, I do, sir
Would you love her? Yes, I would, sir
Whatcha doing, Jennifer, my love?

Jennifer Juniper
Jennifer Juniper
Jennifer Juniper

Jennifer Juniper, lives upon a hill
Jennifer Juniper, sitting very still

Is she sleeping? I don't think so
Is she breathing? Yes, very low
Whatcha doing, Jennifer, my love?
