East West (Herman's Hermits, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-01-22. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"East West," written by Graham Gouldman, was Herman's Hermits 13th consecutive top 40 hit in the US rising to no. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). Gouldman wrote a few hit songs for the Hermits: "No Milk Today," "Listen People" and "East West." Peter Noone (aka Herman) explained the history of the Hermits' relationship with Gouldman. "Graham Gouldman's songs came to us because our manager was his brother-in-law. He was a friend. . . . We used to play this place, and our friend [Gouldman] was in the Mockingbirds, which eventually became 10cc . . . My manager married one of the sisters and Graham married another one of the sisters. . . So we got every Graham Gouldman song first. Every one of them. We did 'Bus Stop' [The Hollies] first, we did 'For Your Love' [The Yardbirds] first, we did 'Listen People' first" (R. Catlin, songfacts, Dec. 7, 2016).

Lyrics:

East west over the ocean
Perpetual motion, traveling around
No rest, singing and playing
Night out and day in, doing the rounds
What a great life it must seem

Swell joints, everything classy
Nothing that's passé, only the best
Lush girls ogling and eyeing
Crying and sighing, this is success
What a great life it must seem

But when I hear young voices singing out
The bells at home come ringing out
When I think all alone
When I think of my home

Mom, dad all round the fire
In festive attire, keeping the day
Aunts, kids, all the relations
Congratulations, this is success
What a great life it must seem

But when I hear young voices singing out
The bells at home come ringing out
When I feel all alone
Then I long for my home
